Dave Chappelle Helps Save Local Radio Station, Restoring Historic Schoolhouse in Yellow Springs

Comedian Dave Chappelle joined community members and officials Thursday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of two significant projects in Yellow Springs, Ohio: the restoration of a historic 19th-century schoolhouse and the relocation of local radio station WYSO to the renovated building.

Standing on the front lawn of the newly restored Union Schoolhouse, Chappelle addressed the gathering of more than 200 people, emphasizing the importance of keeping the radio station rooted in the small town he calls home.

“It’s like our lifeblood in the community,” Chappelle told The Associated Press, adding that the station’s possible relocation to nearby Dayton would have been “a crushing blow” for Yellow Springs.

The ceremony marked a pivotal moment for both local preservation efforts and media sustainability in an era when local news outlets nationwide face unprecedented challenges. Yellow Springs Mayor Steve McQueen and Dayton Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss joined Chappelle, his family, and station leaders to commemorate the occasion.

Originally constructed in 1872, the Union Schoolhouse served as one of the village’s earliest integrated schools before later housing municipal offices and small businesses. After sitting vacant for years, the building was purchased in 2020 by Iron Table Holdings, Chappelle’s real estate company, and has since been transformed into a modern, multiuse space.

WYSO, now in its 68th year of operation, occupies the lower floors of the building, while Chappelle’s offices will be located on the top floor. For the comedian, the investment represents more than a business decision.

“If you have the opportunity like I did, to invest in your community, then it’s one of the greatest investments I’ve ever made,” Chappelle said. “In some ways it feels dutiful. Other times I feel proud… but ultimately, I’m doing it because I want to, not because I have to.”

The project comes at a critical time for local media. Across the country, news outlets are grappling with diminishing resources, changing audience habits, and fierce competition from digital platforms. In this landscape, Chappelle views stations like WYSO as stabilizing forces.

He described the station as “a beacon for sanity,” offering “a solid baseline of truth in context” amid an increasingly fragmented information ecosystem.

Yellow Springs resident Mark Willis echoed this sentiment: “I grew up listening to WYSO since high school, and they’ve always been here connecting to the people. They’re not out of a big city. They’re not subject to censorship by a sponsor. They tell the truth, they tell the stories, and it’s rare these days. To see them growing instead of shrinking is beautiful.”

Rather than simply donating funds, Chappelle took a more sustainable approach by financing the redevelopment of the building itself. This arrangement allows the station to maintain its local roots while preserving editorial independence.

“Dave has never made a suggestion about our programming,” emphasized Luke Dennis, general manager at WYSO. Dennis explained that the new facility transforms how the station engages with its audience by providing performance space, gathering areas, and expanded capacity for programming.

“We belong to the community,” Dennis added, noting that while public radio stations in smaller markets have faced mounting pressure in recent years, this investment positions WYSO “in a place of strength.”

Yellow Springs has long been significant to Chappelle. Though raised in Maryland, he spent summers in the village where his late father worked as dean of students at Antioch College. Now residing on a 39-acre farm with his family, Chappelle has become deeply integrated into the community.

His local investments extend beyond the schoolhouse to include downtown properties and a comedy club. During the pandemic, he hosted nationally recognized performances in a nearby cornfield. Chappelle has also actively participated in local governance, speaking at town meetings and supporting various community initiatives.

As attendees toured the restored building following the ceremony, the event represented more than a simple ribbon-cutting.

“I’m more determined and inspired that these institutions flourish and stay of the people,” Chappelle reflected afterward. “The only way they can do that is the people supporting them. I’m hopeful more than worried.”
