Brazilian authorities have placed 10 individuals under house arrest following their convictions for participating in a plot to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro in power after his 2022 electoral defeat. Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes issued the orders on Saturday, tightening restrictions on suspects who had previously been subject to lighter cautionary measures.

The decision came shortly after Paraguayan authorities apprehended Silvinei Vasques, the former director of Brazil’s Federal Highway Police, who had fled Brazil in an apparent attempt to evade justice. Vasques was extradited back to Brazil on Friday night after being caught trying to board a flight to El Salvador using Paraguayan documents. Brazilian police reported that Vasques had removed his ankle monitor on Thursday before driving to Paraguay in a rental car.

Among those now under house arrest is Filipe Martins, who served as an advisor to Bolsonaro during his presidency. Martins’ lawyer, Jeffrey Chiquini, announced on social media platform X that they intend to appeal the decision, arguing that “there is no greater injustice than condemning a person for the actions of another.”

The legal actions are part of a broader case that resulted in Bolsonaro’s conviction in September, when he received a 27-year prison sentence for attempting a coup to remain in office despite losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The case has drawn significant attention in Brazil, where democracy was reinstated in 1985 after more than two decades of military rule. The trials of Bolsonaro, along with several generals and police officers allegedly involved in the plot, represent a significant test for Brazil’s democratic institutions.

The case has also created diplomatic tensions between Brazil and the United States. Initially, U.S. President Donald Trump, an ideological ally of Bolsonaro, criticized the proceedings as a “witch hunt” and an “international disgrace.” In response to the trial, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on Brazilian imports and placed financial sanctions against Judge de Moraes, who presided over Bolsonaro’s trial.

However, there are signs that U.S.-Brazil relations may be improving. In November, Trump signed an executive order lowering tariffs on Brazilian beef and coffee, two of the country’s most significant exports to the United States. Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury lifted sanctions against de Moraes and his wife as the two nations continue trade negotiations, suggesting a potential recalibration of the U.S. approach.

Brazil’s political landscape continues to navigate the aftermath of the 2022 election, which was marked by Bolsonaro’s refusal to concede defeat and subsequent allegations of attempted subversion of the democratic process. The legal proceedings against Bolsonaro and his associates highlight Brazil’s commitment to protecting its democratic institutions while raising questions about the political implications of prosecuting a former head of state.

The case also underscores the challenges facing Latin American democracies as they confront threats from within established political systems. Brazil’s handling of these cases is being closely watched by neighboring countries grappling with similar tensions between democratic principles and populist movements.

As the legal process continues, the house arrest orders represent an escalation in the judicial response to what Brazilian authorities have characterized as a serious threat to the country’s constitutional order. The developments signal Brazil’s determination to hold accountable those deemed responsible for attempting to undermine its democratic processes, regardless of their previous positions of power or international connections.
