World Economic Forum President Resigns Amid Jeffrey Epstein Connection Scrutiny
Børge Brende has stepped down from his position as World Economic Forum president and CEO following revelations of his past connections with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
“I am grateful for the incredible collaboration with my colleagues, partners, and constituents, and I believe now is the right moment for the Forum to continue its important work without distractions,” Brende said in a statement announcing his departure.
According to U.S. Justice Department disclosures, Brende had attended three business dinners with Epstein and exchanged communications through email and text messages. These connections, though limited, prompted the WEF’s Governing Board to request an investigation by the organization’s Audit and Risk Committee, which subsequently initiated an independent review.
In its statement regarding Brende’s resignation, the WEF noted that the independent review had been completed, stating, “The findings stated that there were no additional concerns beyond what has been previously disclosed.”
Brende has maintained that his interactions with Epstein were minimal and that he was unaware of Epstein’s criminal history. “I was completely unaware of Epstein’s past and criminal activities,” Brende explained. “Had I known about his background, I would have declined the initial invitation to join Rod-Larsen and any subsequent dinner invitations or other communications.”
According to Brende, his first encounter with Epstein occurred at a dinner organized by former Norwegian Deputy Prime Minister Terje Rod-Larsen. He later attended two similar dinners that included Epstein, and these events, along with “a few emails and SMS messages,” constituted the entirety of his engagement with the disgraced financier.
The WEF, an influential global organization that hosts the annual gathering of world leaders and business executives in Davos, Switzerland, has moved quickly to address the leadership transition. WEF co-chairs André Hoffmann and Larry Fink announced that Alois Zwinggi will serve as interim president and CEO while the Board of Trustees oversees the search for a permanent successor.
“We want to express our sincere appreciation for Børge Brende’s significant contributions to the World Economic Forum,” Hoffmann and Fink said in a joint statement. “His dedication and leadership have been instrumental during a pivotal period of reforms for the organization, leading to a successful annual meeting in Davos. We respect his decision to step down.”
The Epstein scandal has continued to reverberate through global institutions and political circles years after his 2019 death in prison while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Numerous high-profile figures across business, politics, and academia have faced scrutiny over their past associations with Epstein.
The resignation marks another significant departure linked to Epstein connections. Earlier this month, former Norwegian Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland was hospitalized amid an investigation into his own Epstein ties, and other prominent figures in Norway have faced similar scrutiny.
For the World Economic Forum, which advocates for global cooperation on economic, social, and environmental challenges, the leadership change comes at a time of growing scrutiny over the organization’s influence and agenda. The WEF has frequently been a target of criticism from those who view it as an embodiment of globalist interests disconnected from ordinary citizens.
As the organization navigates this transition, the Board of Trustees has emphasized its commitment to maintaining transparency and institutional integrity while continuing its work on international cooperation and economic development initiatives.
