U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff reported “productive and constructive meetings” with Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev in Florida on Saturday, marking significant progress in the Trump administration’s efforts to broker peace between Russia and Ukraine.

“We are encouraged by this meeting that Russia is working toward securing peace in Ukraine and is grateful for [the president’s] critical leadership in seeking a durable and lasting peace,” Witkoff stated on social media platform X.

The high-level discussions included Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, former presidential adviser Jared Kushner, and White House senior advisor Josh Gruenbaum. During a Cabinet meeting on Thursday, Witkoff expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations, noting that “lots of good things [are] happening between the counterparties discussing the land deal.”

“I think the people of Ukraine are now hopeful and expecting that we’re going to deliver a peace deal sometime soon,” Witkoff added.

This Florida meeting follows an earlier diplomatic mission where Witkoff, Kushner, and Gruenbaum traveled to Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin shortly after the World Economic Forum in Davos. The diplomatic team has emerged as key players not only in Russia-Ukraine negotiations but also in other international peace initiatives, including efforts to resolve the Israel-Gaza conflict.

Following the Moscow talks, representatives from the United States met with negotiators from both Ukraine and Russia in what were described as constructive conversations, despite significant obstacles that remain.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy acknowledged progress in these trilateral discussions, writing on X: “A lot was discussed, and it is important that the conversations were constructive. As a result of the meetings held over these days, all sides agreed to report back in their capitals on each aspect of the negotiations and to coordinate further steps with their leaders.”

The peace negotiations come at a critical time for Ukraine, which is enduring a harsh winter nearly four years after Russia’s invasion. Russian strikes targeting Kyiv’s energy infrastructure have exacerbated already difficult conditions across the country.

In a humanitarian gesture, President Trump revealed during Thursday’s Cabinet meeting that he had personally requested Putin pause attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian population centers for a week due to the “extreme cold” and “record-setting” temperatures in the region. According to Trump, Putin agreed to this temporary cessation of strikes.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Friday that Trump had requested Putin to stop targeting Kyiv until February 1 “in order to create favorable conditions for negotiations.” The timing mentioned by Peskov suggests a shorter two-day pause rather than the full week referenced by Trump. Weather forecasts indicate conditions may worsen after Sunday, raising questions about the duration and impact of this temporary truce.

The diplomatic momentum continues to build as Russia and Ukraine are scheduled for another round of peace negotiations in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, according to The Kyiv Independent. However, it remains unclear whether U.S. representatives will participate in these upcoming talks.

These developments represent the most significant diplomatic movement toward resolving the conflict since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The U.S.-led peace initiative has taken on renewed urgency as Ukrainian forces face battlefield pressure and civilian infrastructure continues to deteriorate under Russian bombardment.

The potential peace agreement appears to center around territorial considerations, with Witkoff’s reference to “the land deal” suggesting discussions about the status of Ukrainian territories currently under Russian occupation. Previous peace proposals have stalled over these territorial disputes, with Ukraine insisting on restoration of its internationally recognized borders and Russia seeking to legitimize its territorial gains.

As these high-stakes negotiations continue, millions of Ukrainian civilians endure increasingly difficult conditions, with energy shortages and sub-zero temperatures compounding the humanitarian crisis caused by the protracted conflict.
