U.S. Special Envoy Hails Return of Final Israeli Hostage Remains as “New Day in Middle East”

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff declared the beginning of a “new era” in the Middle East following the return of Israeli police officer Ran Gvili’s remains to Israel on Monday. This marked the completion of a painstaking effort to recover all hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack.

“Yesterday was a historic day,” Witkoff wrote on social media platform X. “Now, ALL 20 living hostages and all 28 deceased hostages in Gaza have now been returned to their families – a monumental, historic feat that few thought was possible.”

The special envoy credited President Donald Trump’s administration with the breakthrough, saying it “closes a painful chapter for many, and paves the way for a new future that can be defined by peace, not war, and prosperity, not destruction.”

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, an organization formed after the October 7 attacks to advocate for kidnapped Israelis, thanked Witkoff and the administration, stating, “Without [the president] and his administration, the hostages would never have come home.”

President Trump also celebrated the development on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Just recovered the last hostage body in GAZA. Thus, got back ALL 20 of the living hostages, and ALL of the dead! AMAZING JOB! Most thought of it as an impossible thing to do.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Trump, Witkoff, and presidential advisor Jared Kushner during an address to Israel’s parliament, the Knesset. “No American president has ever done more for Israel,” Netanyahu previously remarked during Trump’s October visit to Israel. “It ain’t even close.”

The recovery of hostages represents a significant diplomatic achievement for the Trump administration, which had previously brokered the Abraham Accords – a series of normalization agreements between Israel and several Arab nations including the UAE, Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan during Trump’s first term.

Ran Gvili’s story highlights the human tragedy behind the diplomatic efforts. The 24-year-old police officer was supposed to be home recuperating from a motorbike accident on October 7, 2023. Despite having a broken shoulder awaiting surgery, when rocket sirens sounded, Gvili put on his uniform and rushed to defend Israel. He was killed while fighting near Kibbutz Alumim, and his body was taken into Gaza where it remained for over 840 days.

In December, Gvili’s mother, Talik, wrote an emotional op-ed describing her son’s courage. “My Ran never hesitated when evil came knocking… That’s who my son was,” she wrote, pledging that his story would “be heard around the world.”

Even as Witkoff celebrated the return of the last remains, he acknowledged the bittersweet nature of the moment. “Even in this moment of relief and happiness, my heart aches for those whose loved ones will not return alive. Bringing their bodies home is a must and an act of dignity and honors their memory forever,” he wrote on X.

The completed return of all hostages, both living and deceased, marks a significant milestone in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. It potentially creates space for broader diplomatic initiatives in the region, though challenges remain in establishing lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

For families like the Gvilis, the return of remains provides a measure of closure after more than two years of uncertainty and grief. For regional diplomats, it represents the removal of one obstacle to potential further progress in Middle East relations.
