British authorities have arrested Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, on suspicion of misconduct in public office, Thames Valley Police confirmed Thursday. The 66-year-old was taken into custody in Norfolk as part of an ongoing investigation that also includes property searches in both Norfolk and Berkshire.

In keeping with standard UK law enforcement practice, police did not explicitly name Mountbatten-Windsor in their official statement. However, when questioned specifically about his arrest, authorities referenced their announcement regarding a man in his 60s being taken into custody, effectively confirming his identity.

Mountbatten-Windsor was previously stripped of his royal titles and military affiliations in January 2022 following widespread criticism over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Queen Elizabeth II announced at that time he would defend the civil sexual assault case brought against him by Virginia Giuffre “as a private citizen.”

The Thames Valley Police investigation marks a significant escalation in Mountbatten-Windsor’s legal troubles, which have already caused considerable damage to the royal family’s reputation in recent years.

Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright addressed the high-profile nature of the case in a statement, saying, “It is important that we protect the integrity and objectivity of our investigation as we work with our partners to investigate this alleged offence.”

“We understand the significant public interest in this case, and we will provide updates at the appropriate time,” Wright added.

The specific details regarding the misconduct allegations remain unclear, though the charge of misconduct in public office is typically reserved for public officials who abuse their positions. The offense carries potentially severe penalties, including imprisonment.

King Charles III released a measured statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation while emphasizing the importance of due process.

“I have learned with the deepest concern the news about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and suspicion of misconduct in public office,” the monarch said. “What now follows is the full, fair and proper process by which this issue is investigated in the appropriate manner and by the appropriate authorities.”

The King added: “In this, as I have said before, they have our full and wholehearted support and co-operation. Let me state clearly: the law must take its course.”

Charles concluded by noting he would not comment further on the matter while proceedings continue, stating that the royal family will “continue in our duty and service to you all.”

The arrest represents yet another chapter in Mountbatten-Windsor’s dramatic fall from grace within the British establishment. Once a respected military veteran who served as a helicopter pilot during the Falklands War, his reputation has been severely tarnished by his connections to Epstein and subsequent handling of the controversy.

In a notorious 2019 BBC interview intended to address the allegations, Mountbatten-Windsor’s performance was widely criticized as tone-deaf and damaging, further intensifying public scrutiny. He subsequently stepped back from royal duties before being formally stripped of his titles and patronages.

Legal experts suggest the current investigation could potentially reveal new information about Mountbatten-Windsor’s activities and associations during his time as a working royal, raising concerns within palace circles about further reputational damage to the monarchy.

While Mountbatten-Windsor remains in police custody, the investigation continues with searches at multiple properties associated with him. Authorities have cautioned media outlets about contempt of court concerns, indicating their determination to protect the integrity of the legal process despite the extraordinary public interest in the case.
