Ukraine has received additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems to bolster its protection against Russia’s persistent aerial bombardments, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced amid continued attacks on civilian areas.
The latest Russian drone assault killed one man and injured five family members, including two children, in the northeastern Sumy region. “The Russians cynically targeted people — deliberately, at night, while they were sleeping,” said regional governor Oleh Hryhorov.
Since the full-scale invasion began nearly four years ago, Russia’s systematic targeting of urban centers has claimed thousands of civilian lives. The strategy has evolved to include deliberate strikes on energy infrastructure, aiming to deprive Ukrainians of heat and water during winter months while simultaneously disrupting Ukraine’s production capabilities for drones and missiles.
“More Patriots are now in Ukraine and being put into operation,” Zelenskyy stated on social media Sunday evening, expressing gratitude to Germany and Chancellor Friedrich Merz for the systems. “Of course, more systems are needed to protect key infrastructure sites and our cities across the entire territory of our state.”
Germany had announced three months ago it would deliver two additional Patriot systems to Ukraine after receiving assurances from the United States that replacement units would be prioritized for German forces. The German Defense Ministry confirmed Monday that Germany has provided more Patriots from its own military stocks than any other nation, along with shorter-range air defense systems including IRIS-T and Skynex.
The sophisticated Patriot systems represent Ukraine’s most effective defense against Russian missiles. While Zelenskyy has consistently appealed to Western allies for more of these systems, production limitations and concerns about maintaining adequate defensive stockpiles have slowed their delivery.
NATO continues to coordinate regular weapons packages for Ukraine, with European allies and Canada purchasing much of the equipment from the United States. Unlike the previous Biden administration, the current Trump administration is not providing direct arms assistance to Ukraine.
In a Monday briefing, Zelenskyy revealed he had discussed energy sector support with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We are working to cover the amount needed for gas imports,” he stated, noting that von der Leyen promised additional assistance as Ukraine prepares for winter.
Addressing battlefield developments, Zelenskyy acknowledged that several hundred Russian troops had entered the eastern stronghold of Pokrovsk, with approximately 60 soldiers infiltrating Kupiansk. This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Moscow’s forces had blockaded both strategic locations—assertions that Kyiv has firmly rejected.
The Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched 12 missiles of various types and 138 strike and reconnaissance drones overnight Sunday to Monday. On some nights, these attacks have involved hundreds of drones and missiles targeting Ukrainian territory. Beyond the deadly assault in Sumy, Russian missiles also triggered a fire at a business in Dnipro, injuring one man, and struck energy infrastructure in the southern Mykolaiv region.
Ukraine has responded with its own strategic operations, including targeting Russia’s vital oil industry. The Ukrainian general staff reported striking Russia’s Saratov oil refinery overnight, causing a fire at the facility located approximately 500 kilometers (300 miles) from the Ukrainian border. This marks Ukraine’s fourth attack on this specific refinery in less than seven weeks.
The Saratov installation is capable of processing several million metric tons of oil annually. Zelenskyy claimed last week that Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian refineries have successfully reduced Moscow’s oil refining capacity by 20 percent, demonstrating Ukraine’s efforts to undermine Russia’s economic foundations for its continued war effort.
Zelenskyy also highlighted Ukraine’s progress in domestic defense production, stating that the country is ramping up manufacturing of interceptor drones to counter Russian aerial attacks. He expressed confidence that daily production would reach 600-800 units by month’s end. Additionally, he noted that Ukraine now produces twice as many sea drones as it currently deploys, creating export potential for this technology.
