British police searched two properties linked to former ambassador Peter Mandelson on Friday as part of an investigation into potential misconduct in public office related to his connections with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Metropolitan Police Deputy Assistant Commissioner Hayley Sewart confirmed that officers from the Met’s Central Specialist Crime team executed search warrants at two addresses—one in Wiltshire, western England, and another in the Camden area of London.

“The searches are related to an ongoing investigation into misconduct in public office offenses, involving a 72-year-old man,” Sewart stated. Two individuals believed to be police officers were observed entering Mandelson’s residence near Regents Park in London on Friday afternoon.

The investigation centers on documents revealed in recently released Epstein files suggesting Mandelson shared sensitive government information with Epstein approximately 15 years ago. According to these records, in 2009, while serving as the UK’s Business Secretary, Mandelson sent Epstein an internal government report outlining potential ways for Britain to raise money following the 2008 global financial crisis, including the privatization of government assets.

The documents also indicate that the following year, Mandelson appeared to provide Epstein with advance information about an imminent €500 billion deal to stabilize the European single currency. These alleged leaks of privileged information form the core of the misconduct investigation.

Mandelson, 72, a prominent figure in British politics for decades and a key architect of the Labour Party’s modernization in the 1990s, has not been arrested or charged at this point. If ultimately charged and convicted of misconduct in public office, he could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

The case has triggered a significant political crisis for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government. Starmer recently acknowledged that he fired Mandelson from his ambassadorial position after learning about the extent of his connections to Epstein. The prime minister now faces mounting criticism for having appointed Mandelson to one of Britain’s most prestigious diplomatic posts in the first place.

In a public statement on Thursday, Starmer issued an apology directly to Epstein’s victims: “I am sorry, sorry for what was done to you, sorry that so many people with power failed you,” he said. “Sorry for having believed Mandelson’s lies and appointed him.”

The government has promised to release emails and other documentation related to Mandelson’s appointment, which they claim will demonstrate that he deliberately misled officials about his relationship with Epstein.

This investigation highlights the ongoing repercussions of the Epstein scandal, which has implicated numerous high-profile figures across politics, business, and entertainment worldwide. Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, maintained relationships with many powerful individuals, raising questions about who knew of his criminal activities and whether these connections facilitated his operations or helped shield him from consequences.

For Mandelson, who previously served in several senior Cabinet positions under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown before becoming the UK’s European Trade Commissioner, this investigation represents a potentially devastating blow to his legacy. His political career has weathered previous controversies, but the nature of these allegations—potentially betraying public trust by sharing confidential government information—strikes at the heart of his reputation as a public servant.

The police investigation continues, with authorities expected to review extensive documentation and potentially interview other individuals connected to both Mandelson and Epstein as they determine whether to proceed with formal charges.
