British authorities have arrested two men in connection with what Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described as an “antisemitic arson attack” in north London, as investigators explore a possible link to Iran.
Metropolitan Police detained the suspects, aged 45 and 47, at addresses in northwest and central London on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. Police are currently searching their properties as part of the ongoing investigation.
The incident occurred Monday when four ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a volunteer-led ambulance service operating in the predominantly Jewish area of Golders Green in north London, were set on fire. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams of the Metropolitan Police acknowledged awareness of “an online claim from a group taking responsibility for this attack” but emphasized that establishing the claim’s authenticity remains a priority. When questioned about the possible Iran connection, Metropolitan Police stated that determining the motivation behind the attack is central to their ongoing investigation.
Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counterterrorism Policing London, which is leading the investigation, described the arrests as “an important breakthrough” while noting that “CCTV footage of the incident suggests there were at least three people involved.” This indicates authorities are continuing to search for at least one more suspect.
“We have been working around the clock since this appalling attack took place and this has led to these arrests being made this morning,” Flanagan said.
The incident comes amid rising antisemitism across Europe, with similar attacks reported in Belgium and the Netherlands. In response, Belgian authorities recently deployed military personnel to protect Jewish sites following an antisemitic synagogue explosion claimed by the same group potentially linked to the London attack.

Williams assured the community that “a bespoke policing plan and activity, which is particularly focused around vulnerable areas right across London, will continue over coming days and weeks.”
