A Turkish Airlines flight made an emergency landing in Barcelona on Thursday morning after a passenger created a Wi-Fi hotspot with a name suggesting there was a bomb on board, triggering a full security response that ultimately proved to be a hoax.
Flight 1853, carrying 148 passengers and seven crew members, was approaching Barcelona-El Prat Airport from Istanbul when a crew member spotted the alarming Wi-Fi network name that reportedly read, “I have a bomb, everyone will die.”
“It was detected that a passenger had created an in-flight internet access point and named the network in a way that included a bomb threat,” said Yahya Üstün, senior vice president of communications at Turkish Airlines, in a statement on social media platform X.
The Airbus A321 was cruising over the Mediterranean when the threat was discovered, prompting immediate implementation of emergency protocols. As part of the security response, the aircraft was escorted to Barcelona by two fighter jets—one Spanish and one French—highlighting the seriousness with which aviation authorities treated the incident.
Upon landing, the plane was directed to a designated isolation area of the airport for thorough inspection. Spanish authorities, including personnel from the Civil Guard, National Police, and Catalonia’s regional police and fire services, responded to the scene.
Footage from the airport showed security teams using sniffer dogs to examine passengers’ luggage, which had been removed and lined up on the tarmac for inspection. The comprehensive security operation reflected standard procedure for handling potential threats to aviation safety.
“No irregularities were found” following the thorough inspection, according to officials, confirming the incident was a hoax. While authorities worked to identify the passenger responsible for creating the threatening Wi-Fi name, no immediate information was released about potential charges or consequences for the individual involved.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in global aviation, where even perceived threats trigger comprehensive emergency responses. Aviation security experts note that such hoaxes are taken extremely seriously due to their potential to cause widespread panic and disruption.
False bomb threats on aircraft carry severe legal penalties in most countries, including possible imprisonment and substantial fines. They also create significant operational disruptions and financial costs for airlines and airports, which must divert resources to address such threats.
Despite the security scare, operations at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, one of Spain’s busiest international hubs, resumed normally following the incident. The airport, which handles over 50 million passengers annually, has well-established protocols for handling security threats without causing extended disruptions to overall operations.
Turkish Airlines, the flag carrier of Turkey and a member of the Star Alliance network, is one of the largest airlines in the world, operating flights to over 300 destinations across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The airline has maintained a strong safety record and is known for its extensive international route network.
“Our aircraft’s return flight will be carried out after the completion of passenger boarding,” Üstün added in his statement, indicating that normal operations would resume once the security situation was fully resolved.
This incident underscores the serious consequences of making even joking references to security threats in aviation environments, where authorities must treat all potential threats as genuine until proven otherwise.

Wow, that’s a pretty serious situation. I wonder if the passenger was just trying to pull a prank or if there was something more sinister going on. Either way, it’s good the crew and authorities took it so seriously to ensure everyone’s safety.
Definitely a concerning incident. I hope they’re able to get to the bottom of the passenger’s motives and take appropriate action.
It’s alarming that a simple Wi-Fi name could spark such a major emergency response, but aviation security has to be taken extremely seriously these days. Glad there was no actual bomb and the plane landed safely.
You’re right, the authorities can’t afford to take any chances when it comes to potential threats on flights. Better safe than sorry in a situation like this.
