Regional Tensions Escalate as Turkey Suggests Syrian Military Action Against Kurdish Forces

Tensions between Syria’s transitional government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) reached a critical point this week following a Turkish statement that Damascus might resort to military force against the group. The warning comes after days of deadly clashes in and around Aleppo that have displaced tens of thousands of civilians.

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Thursday that Syria’s use of force against the SDF appears to be an option, though he expressed hope the crisis could be resolved through dialogue. The remarks followed fighting that has already claimed at least 23 lives, according to Reuters reports.

The escalation highlights mounting pressure in a region where negotiations to integrate the SDF into Syria’s national army have stalled nearly a year after the signing of a U.S.-backed framework agreement in March 2025.

The United States remains deeply involved in diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. U.S. Central Command is actively mediating on the ground in Syria alongside international partners including France, the United Kingdom, Turkey, and Jordan.

“CENTCOM is on the ground inside Syria playing an active mediating role every single day,” explained Charles Lister, senior fellow and director of the Syria Initiative at the Middle East Institute. “Fundamentally, the United States remains the SDF’s biggest and most important backer, supporter, provider of finance, training and to an extent defense.”

The SDF, which played a critical role in helping U.S. forces defeat ISIS in Syria, issued a statement Wednesday accusing Syrian government forces and Turkey of a “dangerous military escalation” across eastern Aleppo’s countryside. The group claimed Syrian forces carried out more than a dozen attacks using artillery, mortars, and suicide drones, targeting civilian infrastructure including a post office and bakery.

Additionally, the SDF reported Turkish Bayraktar drone strikes on multiple SDF positions near Maskanah and Tabqah. Neither Turkey nor the Syrian government had publicly responded to these allegations at the time of reporting.

The current crisis stems from the failed implementation of the March 2025 agreement that was intended to merge SDF forces into Syria’s Ministry of Defense. While the Syrian government has shown flexibility in negotiations, according to experts, internal divisions within the SDF appear to be a significant obstacle.

“The fact that no deal has been implemented is quite frankly because the SDF is not a united, cohesive movement,” Lister noted. “There are elements within the SDF who absolutely do not want this deal to be implemented.”

Some factions within the Kurdish-led forces appear to be deliberately delaying implementation, calculating that stalling might lead the Syrian transitional government to take actions that could damage its international credibility. “It’s just a stall-and-wait-and-see approach,” said Lister, adding that “that approach is intrinsically dangerous. It only guarantees conflict.”

The situation has been further complicated by recent Turkish military involvement. “Over the past two or three days, there have been a number of Turkish drone strikes on SDF military bases in this frontline district in eastern rural Aleppo,” Lister observed. “Turkey is primed to get back involved. When Turkey has gone all out on the SDF, the SDF haven’t stood a chance.”

Approximately 900 U.S. troops remain stationed in Syria, underscoring America’s continued military presence in the region. Analysts suggest that only high-level diplomatic intervention might alter the current trajectory toward further conflict.

“The only thing that’s going to change the equation here is if President Trump makes it publicly clear that this deal has to be made and implemented expeditiously,” Lister emphasized.

The deteriorating situation threatens to destabilize a region already marked by years of conflict and humanitarian crises. “This is not contained,” warned Lister. “All the preparations are clearly being made for this to become an active military zone unless serious diplomacy pulls both sides off the brink.”

As international mediators work to prevent further escalation, the humanitarian consequences for civilians caught in the crossfire remain a serious concern, with tens of thousands already displaced by the recent fighting.
