At least 10 dead as tourist boat capsizes in northern India’s Yamuna River

A tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna River near the holy town of Vrindavan in northern India on Friday, killing at least 10 people and highlighting ongoing safety concerns with India’s waterway transportation.

The privately operated vessel overturned while carrying approximately 25 passengers, despite having a maximum capacity of only 15, according to local officials. The accident occurred near Vrindavan, a major Hindu pilgrimage destination in Uttar Pradesh state known for its religious significance as the birthplace of Lord Krishna.

Senior administrative officer Chandraprakash Singh told reporters that 15 people were rescued from the water, with four of them in critical condition. The deceased included six women, and all victims were Indian nationals.

“Preliminary investigations suggest strong winds caused the vessel to become unstable before it collided with a pontoon bridge and capsized,” Singh said. He added that rescue operations were immediately launched, but the boat operator fled the scene after the accident.

Authorities noted most passengers were not wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Initial inspections revealed the vessel appeared poorly maintained, raising questions about enforcement of safety regulations on tourist boats in the region.

The tourists were part of a larger group of approximately 150 people visiting the area, many of whom had come to Vrindavan for religious pilgrimages and tourism. The town attracts millions of domestic and international visitors annually.

Boating accidents have become a recurring problem across India’s waterways. Safety experts point to a combination of factors, including overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, insufficient safety equipment, and lax enforcement of maritime regulations.

“These tragedies continue to happen because basic safety protocols are routinely ignored,” said Rajesh Kumar, a maritime safety analyst based in New Delhi. “Boat operators often prioritize profits over passenger safety, while regulatory oversight remains inconsistent at best.”

The accident bears similarities to other recent maritime tragedies in India. In 2023, a tourist boat capsized in southern India, resulting in at least 22 fatalities. That incident similarly involved overcrowding and insufficient safety measures.

India’s National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) assisted local authorities in the search and rescue operation, which continued into the evening. Family members of victims gathered at local hospitals as officials worked to identify the deceased.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of the victims and ordered an immediate investigation into the incident. In a statement, his office promised “strict action against those responsible for the tragedy” and announced compensation for the victims’ families.

The accident comes during peak tourism season in northern India, raising concerns about passenger safety as visitor numbers increase across popular destinations. Tourism industry representatives have called for stricter enforcement of safety regulations and better training for boat operators.

India’s Inland Waterways Authority, which oversees river transportation safety, has previously issued guidelines for passenger vessels, including capacity limits and mandatory safety equipment. However, implementation of these regulations varies widely across different states and jurisdictions.

Local authorities in Uttar Pradesh have announced plans to conduct safety audits of all tourist boats operating in the region following Friday’s incident. The state government is also considering new regulations requiring improved safety measures and regular inspections of all passenger vessels.

As recovery operations conclude, attention now turns to preventing similar tragedies in the future, especially in areas where boat travel remains a common mode of transportation and a popular tourist activity.
