The body of an American college student who disappeared during spring break in Barcelona was recovered Thursday from waters near a popular nightclub district, Catalan police confirmed.
James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old University of Alabama student from Elmhurst, Illinois, was found by police divers off a Barcelona beach close to where he was last seen in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The Catalonia regional police officially identified his remains and notified the family.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of death, according to police officials who spoke with The Associated Press.
Gracey had separated from his friends outside Shoko nightclub around 3 a.m. Tuesday and never returned to the accommodation he was sharing with them. Family members became alarmed when Spanish police contacted them after recovering Gracey’s phone.
“Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona,” the Gracey family said in a statement released Thursday evening. “Jimmy was a deeply loved son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend, and our family is struggling to come to terms with this unimaginable loss.”
The family expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of love, support, and prayers from people around the world” while requesting privacy as they begin to process their grief.
Gracey’s aunt, Beth Marren O’Reilly, described her nephew as “just a great kid, a good Catholic boy from the Midwest” in an interview before the confirmation of his death. She highlighted his academic achievements and character, noting he was “a very good student, honors program at University of Alabama, chaplain in his fraternity… just an amazing older brother and role model to his cousins.”
According to family members, Gracey had departed Alabama last Thursday, spent the weekend in Amsterdam, and arrived in Barcelona on Monday for his spring break vacation. His father, Taras Gracey, traveled to Barcelona to work with local authorities during the search.
The area where Gracey disappeared is a popular coastal strip featuring several restaurants and nightclubs frequented by both locals and tourists. Barcelona, one of Europe’s most visited cities, generally maintains a good safety record compared to major American urban centers, with pickpocketing typically being visitors’ primary concern.
