A suicide car bomber and three gunmen launched a deadly attack on a military post near a village in northwest Pakistan on Friday, resulting in a fierce gunbattle that lasted about an hour. Pakistan also issued a clear warning, noting that it “reserves the right to defend its sovereignty and protect its citizens, and will take all necessary measures to respond to terrorism originating from Afghan soil.”
The Afghan Taliban government in Kabul has consistently denied these accusations, maintaining that it does not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against any country, including Pakistan. However, security analysts note that while the TTP operates as an organization separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, the two groups maintain close ideological and historical alliances.
Regional tensions have been particularly high since October when border clashes erupted following explosions in Kabul on October 9 that Afghanistan blamed on Pakistan. Although Qatar managed to broker a temporary ceasefire, subsequent talks hosted by Turkey in November failed to produce a lasting agreement between the two sides.
