A suicide car bomber and three gunmen launched a deadly attack on a military post near a village in northwest Pakistan on Friday, resulting in a fierce gunbattle that lasted about an hour. The assault killed four Pakistani soldiers and wounded at least 15 civilians, including women and children, according to Pakistani authorities.
The attack occurred in North Waziristan, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province along the Afghanistan border. This area has long been known as a former stronghold of the Pakistani Taliban and various other militant groups operating in the region.
According to police reports, the powerful explosion caused nearby homes to collapse, leading to civilian casualties. The Pakistani military stated that all four attackers were killed during the engagement with troops. While no organization immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, the Pakistani military attributed the assault to the Pakistani Taliban, known locally as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
Military officials described how the militants initially attempted to breach the perimeter of the post but were repelled by security forces. After failing in their initial attempt, the attackers then drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the outer wall of the facility. The explosion damaged nearby homes and a mosque in the vicinity.
In a strongly worded statement, the Pakistani military claimed the attack was planned and directed from across the border in Afghanistan. This accusation comes amid escalating tensions between the two neighboring countries, with Pakistan repeatedly alleging that Afghanistan’s Taliban government is providing safe haven to TTP militants.
Following the attack, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Afghan Taliban’s deputy head of mission in Islamabad to lodge a formal diplomatic protest. The ministry demanded a full investigation and decisive action against those responsible for planning and facilitating terrorist attacks launched against Pakistan from Afghan soil.
“The Afghan Taliban regime has been urged to take immediate, concrete and verifiable measures against all terror groups operating from its territory, including their leadership, and deny the continued use of Afghan soil for terrorism against Pakistan,” the ministry stated.
Pakistan also issued a clear warning, noting that it “reserves the right to defend its sovereignty and protect its citizens, and will take all necessary measures to respond to terrorism originating from Afghan soil.”
The Afghan Taliban government in Kabul has consistently denied these accusations, maintaining that it does not allow its territory to be used to launch attacks against any country, including Pakistan. However, security analysts note that while the TTP operates as an organization separate from Afghanistan’s Taliban, the two groups maintain close ideological and historical alliances.
Regional tensions have been particularly high since October when border clashes erupted following explosions in Kabul on October 9 that Afghanistan blamed on Pakistan. Although Qatar managed to broker a temporary ceasefire, subsequent talks hosted by Turkey in November failed to produce a lasting agreement between the two sides.
This latest attack highlights the continuing security challenges facing Pakistan’s northwestern regions and the complicated cross-border dynamics with Afghanistan. North Waziristan has experienced numerous military operations over the past decade aimed at clearing it of militant presence, but attacks continue to occur with alarming frequency.
The incident also underscores the deteriorating relationship between Pakistan and Afghanistan’s Taliban government, with cross-border terrorism remaining a significant point of contention between the neighboring countries that share a 1,600-mile porous border.
