Five Dead as Private Plane Carrying Senior Indian Official Crashes in Western India

A private plane carrying Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar crashed in western India on Wednesday, killing all five people on board, according to aviation authorities.

The Learjet 45 went down while attempting to land at Baramati, approximately 254 kilometers (159 miles) from Mumbai. The aircraft burst into flames after crash-landing in an open field near the runway. Television footage from the scene showed smoke billowing from the wreckage.

Pawar, 66, was traveling from Mumbai to his home city of Baramati to campaign in a local election when the accident occurred. Two of his staff members and two crew members also perished in the crash.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the crew had communicated with a local flight instructor before attempting to land, inquiring about wind conditions and visibility. Despite reports of calm winds and visibility of approximately 3,000 meters, the crew initially reported that the runway wasn’t visible. Local media suggested poor visibility may have been a factor in the crash.

“The aircraft’s crew enquired about winds and visibility with a local instructor before attempting to land,” the ministry statement said, noting that Baramati is an uncontrolled airfield without a dedicated air traffic control tower. Instead, traffic information at the airstrip is provided by instructors from nearby flight training organizations.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation confirmed the deaths in an official statement. India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

Pawar held significant political influence in Maharashtra, India’s second-most populous state and home to Mumbai, the country’s financial hub. As Deputy Chief Minister, he was the second-highest elected official in the state and part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling coalition.

A veteran politician, Pawar was particularly influential in Maharashtra’s agricultural sector, specifically in the state’s sugar belt. He was known for his ability to mobilize rural voters and maintained considerable sway in regional politics. His family has long been a powerful force in Maharashtra’s political landscape.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his condolences on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “His understanding of administrative matters and passion for empowering the poor and downtrodden were also noteworthy,” Modi wrote. “His untimely demise is very shocking and saddening. Condolences to his family and countless admirers.”

The accident has sent shockwaves through Maharashtra’s political establishment, where Pawar was considered a key political operator. His death creates a significant void in the state’s governance structure just as local elections approach.

Aviation safety in India has been under increased scrutiny in recent years, with the country working to improve its air safety standards while experiencing rapid growth in both commercial and private aviation sectors.

The Learjet 45 involved in the accident is a mid-size business jet manufactured by Bombardier Aerospace, commonly used for executive transport. It typically accommodates up to nine passengers plus crew.

The crash highlights the challenges of operating at uncontrolled airfields in India, where weather conditions can change rapidly and pilots must rely on limited ground support for landing information.

Maharashtra officials have announced that state honors will be accorded to Pawar during funeral ceremonies planned in the coming days, with political leaders from across India expected to attend.
