A Russian man was sentenced to four years in prison on Friday by a London court for assaulting his girlfriend in an attack that was witnessed via video call by Barron Trump, the youngest son of President Donald Trump.

Matvei Rumiantsev, a 23-year-old MMA fighter working as a receptionist in London, was convicted by a jury in January of assault causing bodily harm. The jury acquitted him of rape and choking charges related to the January 2025 incident, as well as separate rape and assault allegations from November 2024.

Justice Joel Bennathan delivered a scathing assessment during sentencing, telling Rumiantsev, “Your lack of insight and empathy was apparent at trial. You continue to try to blame the complainant for everything that has happened.” In addition to the assault conviction, Rumiantsev was found guilty of perverting the course of justice after he sent a letter from jail asking the victim to withdraw her allegations.

The case gained international attention due to Barron Trump’s involvement. The 19-year-old had placed a late-night FaceTime call to the woman, whom he had met through social media. During the call, he unexpectedly witnessed the assault taking place.

“That view lasted maybe one second and I was racing with adrenaline,” Barron Trump told investigators. “The camera was then flipped to the victim getting hit while crying, stating something in Russian.”

Despite being in the United States at the time, Barron Trump immediately contacted London police. The recording of his emergency call captured his urgency: “It’s really an emergency… I’m calling from the U.S., uh, I just got a call from a girl, you know, she’s getting beat up.”

Police responded to the address provided and arrested Rumiantsev. During court proceedings, it emerged that Rumiantsev had admitted feeling jealous of his girlfriend’s friendship with the president’s son.

Sasha Wass, Rumiantsev’s attorney, attempted to cast doubt on the reliability of Barron Trump’s account, suggesting that he wasn’t aware the woman had a boyfriend and questioning how much he could have observed during the brief video call.

While Barron Trump did not testify during the trial, Justice Bennathan commended his quick response to the situation. “Mr. Trump properly and responsibly, despite being in the United States, made sure the emergency services here were called, and he told them what he had seen,” the judge stated.

The incident occurred shortly after President Donald Trump’s second inauguration in January 2025. Barron Trump, who has largely remained out of the public eye despite his father’s high profile, has been spotted on the campus of New York University, where he is reportedly a student.

The case highlights the increasingly interconnected nature of international crime prevention, where digital communication tools can enable witnesses to report crimes in progress across international borders. It also demonstrates how even brief video evidence captured during a call can prove crucial in criminal investigations.

For Rumiantsev, the four-year prison sentence marks a significant consequence for his actions. The case serves as a reminder of the serious legal ramifications of domestic violence, as well as the importance of witnesses reporting such incidents promptly to authorities.

The conviction adds to a growing body of cases where digital evidence and remote witnesses play a critical role in securing justice for victims of violent crimes, regardless of geographic boundaries.
