A Russian man has been sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting a woman in London in a case that drew international attention due to the involvement of Barron Trump, the youngest son of U.S. President Donald Trump.
Matvei Rumiantsev, 23, was convicted by a jury in January of assault with bodily harm, though he was acquitted of rape and choking charges. The court also found him guilty of perverting the course of justice after he sent the victim a letter from jail asking her to withdraw her allegations.
During Friday’s sentencing at Snaresbrook Crown Court in east London, Justice Joel Bennathan delivered a scathing assessment of Rumiantsev, describing him as “totally unrepentant” and “a man given to jealousy.”
“Your lack of insight and empathy was apparent at trial,” the judge told Rumiantsev. “You continue to try to blame the complainant for everything that has happened.”
The incident occurred on January 18, 2025, when an intoxicated Rumiantsev attacked the victim, whose identity is protected under British law, in a jealous rage over her friendship with Barron Trump. The woman had connected with the president’s son through social media channels.
In a turn of events that proved crucial to the case, Rumiantsev answered an incoming FaceTime call from Barron Trump on the victim’s phone during the assault. He turned the camera to show the woman crying on the floor, inadvertently providing visual evidence of the attack.
From his location in the United States, the 20-year-old Trump immediately contacted London police, explaining to the operator: “It’s really an emergency… I’m calling from the U.S., uh, I just got a call from a girl, you know, she’s getting beat up.” Despite some communication difficulties during the call, his intervention prompted police to respond to the address, where they arrested Rumiantsev, who worked as a receptionist in London.
The judge praised Barron Trump’s actions, stating that his decision to contact emergency services potentially prevented a more serious outcome. “Mr. Trump properly and responsibly, despite being in the United States, made sure the emergency services here were called, and he told them what he had seen,” Justice Bennathan noted, adding that the victim feared for her life during the attack.
During the trial, Rumiantsev admitted to feeling jealous of Trump but claimed he also felt sympathy for him, believing the woman was leading the president’s son on. Defense lawyer Sasha Wass attempted to cast doubt on the reliability of Trump’s brief video observation, suggesting he could have seen little in the “five or seven seconds of video.” The defense characterized the relationship between Rumiantsev and the victim as “full of dramas,” claiming the woman had exploited her connection to Trump to provoke jealousy.
Barron Trump, the only child of Donald and Melania Trump, did not testify in the proceedings.
The case highlights the increasingly interconnected nature of modern relationships formed through social media, as well as how digital communications can serve as critical evidence in criminal cases. It also demonstrates how video calling technology can enable witnesses to observe and report crimes occurring thousands of miles away.
For Rumiantsev, the four-year sentence marks the culmination of a case that not only resulted in his conviction for physical assault but also revealed his attempts to manipulate the judicial process by pressuring the victim to recant her statements—behavior the court explicitly condemned in its sentencing decision.
