A Russian drone strike on a bus carrying mineworkers in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro killed at least a dozen people on Sunday, Ukrainian authorities reported. The attack came amid ongoing peace negotiation efforts between the warring nations.
The strike injured several more people and sparked a fire that emergency services later extinguished. DTEK, Ukraine’s largest private energy company, identified the bus as its property and condemned what it called “a large-scale terrorist attack on DTEK mines in the Dnipropetrovsk region.”
“The epicenter of one of the attacks was a company bus transporting miners from the enterprise after a shift in the Dnipropetrovsk region,” the company stated in a Telegram post.
Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal described the incident as “a cynical and targeted attack on energy sector workers,” noting that it occurred near the Ternivska mine east of Dnipro.
The attack follows recent claims by U.S. President Donald Trump that the Kremlin had agreed to temporarily halt strikes on the Ukrainian capital and other cities. Ukraine is currently experiencing freezing temperatures, creating additional hardship for its population already struggling with the effects of the ongoing conflict.
In another incident the same day, Russian attack drones injured six people at a maternity hospital in Zaporizhzhia, southern Ukraine. The Ukrainian emergency service reported that the strike sparked a fire in the gynecology reception area, which was later extinguished.
Against this backdrop of continued violence, diplomatic efforts continue to seek an end to the nearly four-year conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the next round of peace talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations will take place Wednesday and Thursday in Abu Dhabi.
“We have just had a report from our negotiating team. The dates for the next trilateral meetings have been set: Feb. 4 and 5 in Abu Dhabi. Ukraine is ready for substantive talks, and we are interested in an outcome that will bring us closer to a real and dignified end to the war,” Zelenskyy said via Telegram.
These negotiations are part of the Trump administration’s yearlong effort to broker a peace agreement. While both sides have expressed agreement in principle with Washington’s calls for compromise, they remain deeply divided over fundamental issues.
A central point of contention is the fate of Ukrainian territories currently occupied by Russian forces, particularly the eastern industrial heartland known as the Donbas. The parties disagree on whether Russia should withdraw from these areas or retain control, including potentially claiming land it has not yet captured.
Russian top envoy Kirill Dmitriev reported having a “constructive meeting with the U.S. peacemaking delegation” in Florida on Saturday, though officials have revealed few details about the ongoing talks.
The intensification of drone warfare continued overnight, with Ukraine’s air force reporting that Russia launched 90 attack drones, with 14 striking nine locations. Two people were killed in a separate overnight drone strike in Dnipro, according to local administration head Oleksandr Hanzha.
In Kherson, southern Ukraine, Russian shelling early Sunday seriously wounded a 59-year-old woman, the municipal military administration reported.
Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed its forces targeted transport infrastructure used by Ukrainian forces and said Russian air defenses shot down 21 Ukrainian drones flying over southwestern and western Russia. The ministry did not mention any casualties or damage from these incidents.
The continued attacks underscore the challenges facing peace negotiators as they work toward ending a conflict that has devastated Ukraine’s infrastructure, caused thousands of casualties, and displaced millions since Russia’s full-scale invasion began almost four years ago.
