A Russian drone strike in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region on Tuesday night killed a father and his three small children, leaving only the pregnant mother alive in what local officials described as another attack targeting civilians in the ongoing conflict.
Oleg Synegubov, governor of the Kharkiv region, reported via Telegram that the attack on the town of Bohodukhiv claimed the lives of 34-year-old Grigory and his three children — 2-year-old twin boys, Ivan and Vladyslav, and their 1-year-old sister Myroslava.
In a cruel twist of fate, the family had just evacuated from Zolochiv, a front-line town approximately 25 miles from the Russian border, seeking safety from persistent shelling. The drone strike hit their new residence on the very first night after their relocation.
Olga, the children’s 35-year-old mother who is 35 weeks pregnant, survived with injuries and minor burns. She received medical care and was later discharged from the hospital.
“The Russian army once again targeted an ordinary residential building in the middle of the night,” Synegubov said. “Another terrorist act of the state fighting against the civilian population – against small children, pregnant women, elderly people.”
According to preliminary data from the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, the attack was carried out using a “Geran-2” drone, which is the Russian designation for an Iranian-designed Shahed-136. These one-way attack drones detonate on impact and have become a common weapon in Moscow’s arsenal against Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure.
The incident highlights Russia’s continued strategy of targeting civilian areas, a tactic that has drawn international condemnation but persists as the war approaches its third year. The Shahed drones, supplied by Iran, have become a signature weapon in Russia’s campaign, allowing for long-range strikes while preserving Russia’s more expensive precision missile inventory.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Wednesday that Russian forces had conducted additional strikes across border and frontline regions, including launching 470 attack drones at Kherson in a single day – an indication of the escalating drone warfare.
“Gas supply restoration is ongoing in the Donetsk region – also following a Russian strike. There were strikes on infrastructure in the Dnipro region, in the Synelnykove district,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media. “Some consumers are currently without electricity in Zaporizhzhia after ‘shahed’ strikes – restoration work is underway.”
The attack comes as Ukraine faces increasing pressure along its eastern front, where Russian forces have been making gradual advances in recent months. The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia and was partially occupied in the early stages of the full-scale invasion, has remained a frequent target of Russian attacks despite Ukrainian forces having reclaimed much of the territory in a 2022 counteroffensive.
