European Nations Confirm Navalny Poisoned with Rare Frog Toxin, Blame Kremlin
Five European nations announced Saturday that Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was killed using a rare and lethal neurotoxin found in poison dart frogs, directly implicating the Kremlin in his death.
Foreign ministries from the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, and the Netherlands released a joint statement confirming that laboratory analysis of samples from Navalny’s body “conclusively confirmed the presence of epibatidine.” The poison, naturally secreted by dart frogs native to South America, is not found naturally in Russia.
“Russia had the means, motive and opportunity to administer this poison,” the statement declared. The five countries are reporting Russia to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for violating the Chemical Weapons Convention, a move that could trigger further international consequences.
Navalny, Putin’s most prominent critic who led massive anti-corruption protests throughout Russia, died on February 16, 2024, while serving a 19-year sentence in an Arctic penal colony. His imprisonment was widely viewed internationally as politically motivated retribution for his activism against the Putin regime.
British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper did not mince words about the findings: “Russia saw Navalny as a threat. By using this form of poison, the Russian state demonstrated the despicable tools it has at its disposal and the overwhelming fear it has of political opposition.”
The accusation was even more pointed from French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, who wrote on social media that the poisoning demonstrates “that Vladimir Putin is prepared to use biological weapons against his own people in order to remain in power.”
The timing of the announcement coincided with Navalny’s widow Yulia Navalnaya’s appearance at the Munich Security Conference in Germany, just days before the second anniversary of her husband’s death. She has consistently blamed Putin for her husband’s death, stating Saturday that she had been “certain from the first day” that he was poisoned.
“Putin killed Alexei with chemical weapon,” Navalnaya wrote, calling the Russian president “a murderer” who “must be held accountable.”
Russian authorities have maintained that Navalny died from natural causes after becoming ill following a walk. The Kremlin has vehemently denied any involvement in his death.
The European scientists’ findings suggest the epibatidine used was likely manufactured in a laboratory rather than extracted from natural sources. The toxin affects the body similarly to nerve agents, causing respiratory distress, convulsions, seizures, slowed heart rate, and eventually death.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul acknowledged the lengthy investigation, calling it “a complicated process.” He noted that while “no one but Putin’s henchmen will be able to say in detail what happened,” it was clear that “Russian authorities had the possibility, the motive and the means to administer the poison to Navalny.”
This was not Navalny’s first poisoning. In 2020, he nearly died after being exposed to the nerve agent Novichok, an attack he blamed on the Kremlin. After emergency treatment and recovery in Germany, Navalny bravely returned to Russia in 2021, where he was immediately arrested and imprisoned for the final three years of his life.
The UK government pointed to a pattern of Russia violating international bans on chemical and biological weapons. They cited the 2018 Novichok attack in Salisbury that targeted former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter, which also resulted in the death of an uninvolved British woman, Dawn Sturgess.
A British inquiry into the Salisbury incident concluded the attack “must have been authorized at the highest level, by President Putin.” Similarly, a separate inquiry found that Putin had “probably approved” the 2006 polonium-210 poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, another former Russian agent who became a Kremlin critic.
The confirmation of epibatidine poisoning adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting the Russian government uses sophisticated chemical agents to eliminate political opponents, raising serious concerns about Russia’s continued violation of international norms and treaties governing chemical weapons.
