American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in prison by a Romanian court for drug possession, following his performance at a music festival last summer where he openly smoked cannabis on stage.

The ruling, handed down Thursday by the Constanta Court of Appeal, comes more than a year after the incident at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, a popular coastal resort on Romania’s Black Sea shore. According to prosecutors, Khalifa was found with more than 18 grams of cannabis in his possession and was observed consuming some during his performance.

The court convicted the 38-year-old artist, whose legal name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, of “possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption,” according to Romania’s national news agency, Agerpres. This final ruling overturns a previous, more lenient judgment from a lower court in Constanta County, which had only imposed a criminal fine of 3,600 lei (approximately $830) in April.

Romanian prosecutors had appealed that initial decision, seeking a harsher sentence for the Grammy-nominated musician.

The case highlights Romania’s strict stance on drug offenses compared to other European nations. The Eastern European country maintains some of the most stringent drug laws on the continent, where even possession of cannabis for personal use can result in prison sentences ranging from three months to two years, or substantial fines.

During his performance last July, Khalifa reportedly lit a large, hand-rolled cigarette while performing his hit song “Young, Wild & Free” – a track that notably celebrates cannabis culture. This action apparently prompted Romanian authorities to intervene, detaining the artist after his stage appearance.

The Pittsburgh-born rapper rose to international fame with his 2010 mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice,” followed by mainstream success with hits like “Black and Yellow” and “See You Again,” the latter serving as a tribute to actor Paul Walker in the “Fast & Furious” film franchise. Throughout his career, Khalifa has been open about his cannabis use and has even launched his own cannabis brand.

The legal implications of the sentence remain unclear, particularly regarding enforcement. As Khalifa is an American citizen who does not reside in Romania, questions persist about whether Romanian authorities will pursue extradition to execute the prison sentence. International legal experts suggest the practical application of the sentence may be complicated by jurisdictional challenges.

This case underscores the significant disparities in drug policies worldwide, particularly as many U.S. states and countries have moved toward cannabis decriminalization or legalization in recent years. While recreational cannabis use is now legal in numerous American states and several European countries have adopted more progressive approaches, Romania maintains its conservative stance on drug offenses.

The music industry and fans have been closely watching the case, which represents one of the more serious legal challenges faced by the rapper during his career. Representatives for Khalifa have not yet issued a public statement regarding the sentence.

Tourism experts note that Romania’s coastal resorts, including Costinesti where the festival took place, have been increasingly attracting international performers and tourists in recent years. However, visitors accustomed to more relaxed drug laws in their home countries may be unaware of Romania’s strict legal approach to substances like cannabis.

The case serves as a reminder to international performers and tourists that local laws apply regardless of one’s origin or celebrity status, with potentially severe consequences for violations.
