Rescuers have located wreckage believed to be from a missing sightseeing helicopter inside the crater of one of Japan’s most active volcanoes, authorities announced Wednesday. The search operation continues for three people who remain unaccounted for since the aircraft disappeared Monday.

The helicopter vanished during what was scheduled to be a brief 10-minute scenic flight over Mount Aso in southern Japan’s Kumamoto prefecture. Local police confirmed that debris was spotted Tuesday within the crater of Nakadake, one of the five peaks that comprise the Mount Aso volcanic complex.

Rescue efforts have been significantly hampered by challenging conditions at the site. Strong winds and toxic volcanic gases have prevented teams from accessing the crater to confirm the wreckage’s identity or search for survivors, according to fire department officials involved in the operation.

“We are continuing to hope they survived,” said Takumi Morioka, head of Takumi Enterprise, the tour operator that owns the missing helicopter, during a somber news conference Wednesday. The company has not released the identities of the pilot or the two passengers aboard the aircraft.

This incident marks the second serious safety event for Takumi Enterprise in recent years. In 2022, another of the company’s helicopters was forced to make an emergency landing while conducting a similar tour over Mount Aso. That incident resulted in injuries to three people on board, according to press releases issued at the time.

Mount Aso, standing at 1,592 meters (5,223 feet) tall, is one of Japan’s geological wonders and a significant tourist attraction. The volcano’s caldera ranks among the largest in the world, spanning approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) north to south and 18 kilometers (11 miles) east to west. Its dramatic landscape draws visitors year-round, with helicopter tours providing a popular way to view its impressive geological features.

The volcano last erupted in October 2021, sending ash and smoke thousands of meters into the air and prompting authorities to warn residents and tourists to stay away from the area. Despite its active nature, Mount Aso has remained a cornerstone of the region’s tourism industry, with the prefecture carefully balancing safety concerns against economic interests.

Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau has opened an investigation into the incident, focusing on weather conditions, aircraft maintenance records, and operational protocols. Investigators will examine whether proper safety measures were followed, particularly given the challenging flying environment around active volcanoes.

The Japanese Self-Defense Forces have joined local police and fire departments in the search operation, deploying specialized equipment designed to operate in hazardous volcanic environments. However, officials warn that conditions around the crater remain dangerous, with ongoing volcanic activity potentially posing risks to rescue personnel.

Tourism officials in Kumamoto prefecture have expressed concern about the incident’s impact on the region’s reputation as a safe destination for adventure tourism. Mount Aso helicopter tours represent a significant revenue source for local businesses, with thousands of visitors taking to the skies annually to view the volcanic landscape.

Weather forecasts predict improving conditions in the coming days, which may allow rescue teams better access to the crash site. Authorities have established a command center near Mount Aso to coordinate the multi-agency response and provide updates to the families of those missing.

The Japan Transport Safety Board has dispatched investigators to the region and will issue preliminary findings once the wreckage can be safely examined. Officials have urged patience as they work through the challenging conditions to determine what caused the helicopter to go down during what should have been a routine sightseeing flight.
