A violent attack disrupted a pro-Israel event in Toronto on Wednesday when approximately 40 masked protesters stormed a private venue, injuring one speaker and damaging property. The incident occurred just days after Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow faced criticism for comments about “the genocide in Gaza” that Jewish groups warned could heighten tensions in the city.
The event, organized by Students Supporting Israel at Toronto Metropolitan University, featured Israeli military veterans and was moved off-campus at the last minute due to security concerns. Despite attempts to keep the location private, protesters located the venue and forced their way inside, breaking glass doors and attacking participants.
Jonathan Karten, an Israeli-American speaker who splits his time between Israel and New York, was among those attacked. Karten had traveled to Toronto to share the story of his uncle, Sharon Edri, an Israeli soldier kidnapped and murdered by Hamas in 1996.
“As soon as we got there, we were attacked by roughly forty protesters,” Karten told Fox News Digital. “Five managed to get into the main room. One had a drill bit. A guy broke through the glass door, I got knocked in the face, and we barricaded ourselves with tables and chairs until police came.”
Karten believes the protesters had advance knowledge of the event’s location. “They were waiting for us before we even started speaking,” he said. “It’s not something I assumed would happen in a civilian population in a Western country.”
The assault follows recent controversial remarks by Mayor Chow, who stated during a public event that “the genocide in Gaza impacts us all.” Her comment drew immediate criticism from Jewish organizations, including the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center, whose CEO Michael Levitt urged Chow to apologize and clarify that Israel is not committing genocide.
“It’s shocking and dangerous language,” Levitt told The Algemeiner. “Words like these validate hate and normalize the harassment of Jews.”
According to Toronto police, the protesters entered the private event without permission, damaged property, and created an atmosphere where attendees feared for their safety. One person was injured by broken glass during the incident. Five individuals were arrested in connection with the attack and are scheduled to appear in court in January.
The violence represents a concerning escalation in tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict in Canada, where university campuses have become flashpoints for demonstrations and counter-protests. Similar incidents have occurred at campuses across North America, with pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel groups increasingly coming into direct confrontation.
Canada has grappled with rising antisemitism since the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023 and the subsequent war in Gaza. Earlier this year, Canada’s antisemitism envoy resigned, citing exhaustion amid the surge in hate incidents. However, a Toronto police spokesperson told Fox News Digital that while antisemitic incidents remain the most frequently reported hate-motivated category in the city, they have declined 41% compared to last year.
Jewish community leaders have expressed concern that inflammatory rhetoric from public officials can contribute to a climate where physical attacks become more likely. They point to the need for balanced dialogue that doesn’t employ loaded terms like “genocide” that can inflame tensions.
Despite his injuries, Karten said he intends to continue speaking on campuses about his experiences and family history. “We’re cautious, but not scared,” he said. “We have to make sure Jewish and Israeli voices are heard without fear.”
The attack highlights the challenges facing university administrators and law enforcement in balancing free speech with campus safety, particularly around events related to the Middle East conflict. Many universities have struggled to develop policies that allow for open discourse while preventing violence and intimidation.
For Toronto’s diverse communities, the incident raises questions about how the city can foster constructive dialogue on contentious international issues while ensuring the safety of all residents, regardless of their political or religious affiliations.

It’s troubling to see an academic event targeted by masked protesters resorting to violence. This undermines the ability to have open and respectful discussions on complex geopolitical issues. All sides should condemn such tactics.
Absolutely. Universities should be places where diverse perspectives can be explored without fear of physical intimidation. The organizers deserve praise for trying to provide a platform for different views.
It’s disheartening to see an academic event targeted in this way. Regardless of one’s political views, violence and property damage have no place in civil discourse. I hope the organizers, speakers, and participants are able to continue their discussions safely in the future.
Agreed. Shutting down events through force is antithetical to the values of open dialogue and academic freedom. The authorities must ensure the security and rights of all parties involved are protected going forward.
This incident highlights the challenges communities face in balancing free speech, security concerns, and tensions over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While I don’t condone the mayor’s remarks, the violent response from protesters is unacceptable.
Well said. These are complex issues without easy solutions. Resorting to force and disruption only serves to entrench divisions further. Civic leaders and citizens alike must recommit to resolving differences through peaceful, democratic means.
The mayor’s controversial comments on the situation in Gaza likely inflamed passions on both sides. While political speech should be free, leaders need to be mindful of the impact of their words, especially in divided communities.
You make a fair point. Elected officials have a responsibility to promote unity, not further division. Striking the right balance between free speech and responsible leadership is challenging but crucial.
Violent protests disrupting pro-Israel events are concerning and only serve to escalate tensions. I hope the organizers and participants remain safe and that authorities investigate this incident thoroughly.
Agreed. Violence and destruction should never be the answer, even for those with strongly held views on the conflict. Dialogue and peaceful protest are the best ways to address differences.
The attack on the Israeli-American speaker is particularly disturbing. Assaulting participants and damaging property crosses a line. I hope the perpetrators are held accountable, and that the event organizers receive better security support in the future.
Agreed. No one should face violence for sharing their personal story and experiences, even on controversial topics. The authorities must take strong action to protect the right to free assembly and expression.
