Pope Leo XIV Appoints New Vatican Ambassador to U.S. Amid Diplomatic Tensions

Pope Leo XIV has appointed Italian Archbishop Gabriele Caccia as the Vatican’s new ambassador to the United States, a strategic move aimed at managing increasingly strained relations between the Holy See and the Trump administration.

The 68-year-old Caccia, a veteran Vatican diplomat currently serving as ambassador to the United Nations, will replace the retiring 80-year-old Cardinal Christophe Pierre. Caccia brings substantial diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served as ambassador to the Philippines and Lebanon.

“I receive this mission with both joy and a sense of trepidation,” Caccia said following his appointment, according to Vatican News. He emphasized that his mission was “at the service of communion and peace,” noting the significance of his appointment ahead of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.

The appointment comes at a critical juncture in Vatican-U.S. relations, as Pope Leo XIV and President Donald Trump have publicly diverged on several key policy issues, particularly immigration and military interventions abroad.

The American-born pontiff has been vocal in his criticism of recent U.S. military actions. Following joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, Pope Leo stated, “Stability and peace are not built with mutual threats, nor with weapons, which sow destruction, pain, and death, but only through a reasonable, authentic, and responsible dialogue.”

He further appealed to world leaders “to assume the moral responsibility to stop the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss,” highlighting the Vatican’s growing concern over escalating global conflicts.

Earlier this year, the pope delivered a major policy speech largely in English that came shortly after U.S. military action in Venezuela. “War is back in vogue and a zeal for war is spreading,” he warned, in what many observers interpreted as direct criticism of the Trump administration’s foreign policy approach.

Immigration policy has emerged as another flashpoint between the Vatican and the White House. Last fall, Pope Leo suggested that supporting the “inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States” is not “pro-life,” prompting White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt to “reject there was inhumane treatment of illegal immigrants in the United States under this administration.” Leavitt, who is Catholic, added that the administration always attempts to enforce immigration laws as humanely as possible.

Caccia’s predecessor, Cardinal Pierre, often found himself navigating complex relationships between the Vatican and the more conservative U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops while representing Pope Francis’ progressive priorities. This balancing act will likely remain a challenge for the new ambassador.

Despite these tensions at the diplomatic level, Trump secured 59% of the Catholic vote in the 2024 election, according to Politico, suggesting a disconnect between official Vatican positions and the voting patterns of American Catholics.

When Pope Leo was elected following Pope Francis’ death last May, Trump called it a “great honor for our country.” When asked about the pope’s apparent criticism of his policies earlier this year, Trump told Politico he hadn’t seen the pontiff’s statements but added, “I’m sure he’s a lovely man.” The president also mentioned meeting the pope’s brother, describing him as “serious MAGA.”

Archbishop Paul S. Coakley, current president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, welcomed Caccia’s appointment, saying, “On behalf of my brother bishops, I wish to extend our warmest welcome and our prayerful support to him as he carries out his responsibilities across the United States.”

As Caccia assumes his new role, he faces the challenging task of fostering dialogue between a pontiff committed to peace diplomacy and an administration with decidedly different approaches to global conflicts and immigration policy.
