French authorities announced Friday that a fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the audacious theft of France’s crown jewels from the Louvre Museum last October, potentially completing the apprehension of the entire heist team.
The 39-year-old man, who has six previous convictions including one for receiving stolen goods, now faces preliminary charges of robbery by an organized gang and criminal conspiracy, according to Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years imprisonment for the robbery charge and an additional 10 years for criminal conspiracy.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the investigation of the October 19 heist, which saw priceless historical artifacts worth an estimated 88 million euros ($102 million) stolen from the world’s most-visited museum. The monetary value fails to capture the immense historical significance these jewels hold for French cultural heritage.
The daylight robbery was executed with remarkable precision. A four-person team, with two members breaking into the museum’s ornate Apollo Gallery while two accomplices waited outside on motorbikes, used angle grinders to cut into display cases. The thieves, disguised as workers wearing bright safety vests, accessed the museum through a freight lift and completed their operation in less than eight minutes.
Three other individuals questioned this week in connection with the case have been released without charges, according to the prosecutor’s statement. However, three men suspected of being part of the robbery team were arrested in October and face similar charges. DNA evidence found at the scene and on items linked to the heist helped authorities identify the suspects.
A woman was also arrested in October and charged with complicity in theft and criminal conspiracy. She is reportedly the longtime partner of one of the alleged robbers and resides with him and their children in Paris’s northern suburbs, where other suspects also live. Through her lawyer, she has denied any involvement in the crime.
The stolen treasures include several pieces of exceptional historical value. Among them is a diamond-and-emerald necklace that Napoleon Bonaparte presented to his second wife, Empress Marie-Louise, jewels associated with 19th-century Queens Marie-Amélie and Hortense, and Empress Eugénie’s pearl-and-diamond tiara.
Despite the arrests, investigators have yet to recover the stolen items. The search continues as police work to “locate the stolen jewels and to precisely determine each person’s role in this organized criminal group, as well as to clarify how the theft was planned and perpetrated,” according to Prosecutor Beccuau.
One item was recovered shortly after the theft—the emerald-set imperial crown of Empress Eugénie, which contains more than 1,300 diamonds. The crown was found outside the museum, though circumstances surrounding its abandonment remain unclear.
The brazen heist has raised serious concerns about security measures at the Louvre. The museum’s director has acknowledged a “terrible failure” in their security protocols and promised significant upgrades, including the installation of new surveillance cameras and anti-intrusion systems.
The case has drawn international attention not only for the value of the stolen items but also for the audacity of the thieves who targeted one of the world’s most famous museums in broad daylight. The theft ranks among the most significant museum heists in recent European history, joining notorious cases like the 2019 Dresden Green Vault robbery and the 1990 Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum theft in Boston.
As the investigation continues, authorities remain focused on recovering the historical treasures and bringing all involved parties to justice, while the Louvre works to restore public confidence in its security measures.
