Three Arrested for Christmas Tree Arson at West Bank Catholic Church

Three Palestinians have been arrested by the Palestinian Authority Police for allegedly setting fire to a Christmas tree and damaging a Nativity scene at the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Jenin, a city in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The incident occurred around 3 a.m. Monday, according to church officials. Palestinian authorities announced Wednesday that the suspects were identified through surveillance footage, and police seized tools believed to have been used in the attack during their arrest.

In a statement, Palestinian police strongly condemned the incident as an apparent attempt to incite sectarian and religious tensions in the West Bank, where Christians represent a small minority of the population.

Images shared by the church on social media revealed the aftermath of the attack: a synthetic Christmas tree stripped of its green plastic branches, with red and gold ornaments scattered across the courtyard. Despite the vandalism, church staff quickly cleaned up the damage and erected a new tree in time for Christmas Mass.

Following the incident, the Holy Redeemer Church organized a special unity ceremony attended by local Muslim and Christian leaders and political figures. Reverend Amer Jubran, the parish priest, emphasized that the arson was an isolated incident and highlighted the community’s solidarity.

“This occasion reaffirmed that attempts to harm religious symbols will never diminish the spirit of the city nor the faith of its people,” the church said in a statement.

The attack comes amid growing concerns about the security of Christian communities throughout the region. Christians now make up only between 1-2% of the West Bank’s approximately 3 million residents, with the vast majority being Muslim. The Middle East as a whole has witnessed a steady decline in Christian populations as many flee ongoing conflicts.

The incident in Jenin reflects broader tensions affecting religious minorities in the area. In Israel, church authorities and monitoring organizations have reported an increase in anti-Christian sentiment and harassment, particularly in Jerusalem’s Old City. There have also been reports of Israeli extremist settlers vandalizing and setting fire to areas around churches and Christian villages.

The situation for Christian communities has been further complicated by the escalation of violence following the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. The Israeli military’s operations targeting militants in the West Bank have resulted in hundreds of Palestinian casualties and displaced tens of thousands. Simultaneously, militant groups have carried out deadly attacks against Israelis both in Israel proper and the West Bank.

This broader conflict has coincided with what observers describe as an increase in both Israeli settler violence and Palestinian attacks on Israelis, creating a climate of heightened tension throughout the region.

The Christmas tree arson in Jenin represents just one example of the religious and sectarian pressures facing minority communities caught in the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While local leaders have emphasized unity in response to this specific incident, it underscores the fragile position of Christian communities in an increasingly polarized environment.

For the small Christian population remaining in the West Bank, such incidents add to the factors driving emigration from their ancestral homeland, continuing a demographic trend that has been reshaping the religious landscape of the entire Middle East for decades.
