Pakistan’s imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan will receive specialized medical treatment for a serious eye condition, following growing concerns about his deteriorating vision, a government official announced Saturday.

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the development on social media, stating that leading eye specialists would examine Khan as part of ongoing treatment that began in late January. The decision comes days after Pakistan’s Supreme Court ordered a medical evaluation amid reports that Khan has lost significant vision in his right eye.

“A detailed report will also be submitted to the Supreme Court,” Tarar wrote on X, formerly Twitter, while urging the public to avoid speculation or attempts to leverage the situation for political advantage. The minister did not specify which medical facility would provide the treatment or when it would take place.

The 73-year-old former cricket star’s health has become a major point of concern after his lawyer, Salman Safdar, told the Supreme Court earlier this week that Khan had lost approximately 85% of vision in his right eye. In response, the court directed authorities to arrange a comprehensive medical assessment and facilitate a telephone conversation between Khan and his sons before February 16.

The eye condition has sparked protests across Pakistan, with supporters of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party rallying in Islamabad and other major cities, demanding his transfer from prison to a specialized medical facility. Several PTI lawmakers and allies have also begun a sit-in protest outside the parliament building.

Khan’s family responded critically to Tarar’s announcement, expressing frustration that they had not been consulted before decisions about his medical care were made. They have demanded that family members and Khan’s personal physician be present during any future medical procedures.

Aleema Khan, the former prime minister’s sister, confirmed on social media that authorities had arranged the court-ordered call, allowing Khan to speak with his sons for approximately 20 minutes. She described him as “extremely happy” to hear their voices after a prolonged separation. The family is now awaiting urgent treatment at an eye hospital with the oversight of Khan’s personal doctors.

The medical issue adds another layer of complexity to Khan’s already contentious political situation. Once a national hero for leading Pakistan to cricket glory, Khan has been imprisoned since 2023 following a conviction on corruption charges that his supporters claim are politically motivated.

Khan was removed from power in April 2022 through a parliamentary no-confidence vote. He has consistently maintained that his ouster resulted from a conspiracy involving the United States, Pakistani political rivals, and former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa—allegations that have been denied by all parties implicated.

Despite his imprisonment and legal troubles, Khan remains a powerful and popular political figure in Pakistan. His party made a strong showing in the February 8, 2024, parliamentary elections, though it fell short of securing a majority in the National Assembly. PTI has alleged widespread election rigging, claims the current government firmly denies.

The controversy surrounding Khan’s health and imprisonment reflects the deep political divisions in Pakistan, where the former prime minister’s supporters view him as a victim of political persecution, while his opponents see the legal proceedings against him as legitimate accountability.

As the situation develops, international observers and human rights organizations continue to monitor Khan’s treatment in custody, particularly given the new concerns about his medical condition.
