Opposition leader demands investigation into alleged Hungary-Russia information sharing
Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar has called for an investigation into what he described as “treason” following reports that Hungary’s government has been providing Russia with confidential information from European Union Council meetings for years.
Magyar, whose TISZA party currently leads in polls ahead of parliamentary elections, stated on social media that Foreign Minister Péter Szijjárto “appears to be colluding with Russia, thereby betraying Hungarian and European interests.” The opposition leader pledged that if elected, his government would immediately investigate these allegations, which could potentially carry a life sentence if proven true.
The Washington Post first reported the allegations, citing several current and former European security officials who claimed that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government has long granted Moscow access to sensitive EU discussions. According to these sources, Szijjárto would make regular phone calls to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, during breaks in EU meetings, providing “live reports” on discussions and potential solutions.
“Every single EU meeting for years has basically had Moscow behind the table,” one European security official told the Post.
The allegations come at a politically sensitive time in Hungary, where Orbán’s nationalist Fidesz party, which has held power since 2010, faces a serious electoral challenge. Parliamentary elections are scheduled in three weeks, with polls showing Magyar’s opposition TISZA party ahead of the incumbent administration.
Szijjárto has maintained close ties with Moscow despite Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, making 16 official visits to Russia since the start of the war. Most recently, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 4. His office has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these allegations.
Orbán has responded to the report by ordering an investigation, but with a different focus. Rather than addressing the allegations of information sharing, the Prime Minister characterized the situation as a case of “wiretapping” of Szijjárto.
“The wiretapping of a government member is a serious attack on Hungary,” Orbán stated on social media. “I have instructed the Minister of Justice to immediately investigate the information regarding the wiretapping of Péter Szijjártó.”
The European Commission has stated it is seeking clarification directly from Hungary about these serious allegations. “A relationship of trust between member states and between the institution is fundamental for the work of the EU,” said commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper. “We expect the Hungarian government to provide clarifications.”
Hungary’s relationship with the European Union has been increasingly strained, particularly since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Tensions escalated further this month when Orbán withdrew from a previously agreed plan to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion ($104 billion) loan.
Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a frequent critic of Orbán, responded to the allegations with little surprise. “The news that Orbán’s people inform Moscow about EU Council meetings in every detail shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone,” Tusk wrote on social media. “We’ve had our suspicions about that for a long time. That’s one reason why I take the floor only when strictly necessary and say just as much as necessary.”
The allegations underscore growing concerns about Hungary’s position within the European bloc, particularly regarding its close ties with Russia at a time when most EU members have firmly aligned against Moscow following the Ukraine invasion. If proven true, these revelations could further isolate Hungary diplomatically within the European Union and potentially influence the outcome of the upcoming Hungarian elections.
