North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter observed a powerful rocket launcher test on Saturday, as tensions continue to rise during joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises.
The test, conducted off North Korea’s east coast, featured twelve 600mm-caliber “ultraprecision” rocket launchers, according to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). South Korean military officials confirmed detecting approximately 10 ballistic missiles fired from the Pyongyang region toward the sea.
South Korea’s national security council immediately condemned the launches as a provocation that violated United Nations Security Council resolutions prohibiting North Korea from conducting ballistic missile activities.
During the demonstration, Kim declared that the weapons would cause “uneasiness” to enemies within their 420-kilometer (260-mile) striking range and give them “a deep understanding of the destructive power of tactical nuclear weapons.” His comments appeared directed at South Korea and the U.S. military presence in the region.
“If this weapon is used, the opponent’s military infrastructure within its striking range can never survive,” Kim was quoted as saying by KCNA.
State media released photographs showing Kim and his daughter, believed to be Kim Ju Ae and approximately 13 years old, walking near massive olive-green launch vehicles and observing the weapons test. The young girl has become a regular presence at high-profile military and state events since late 2022, fueling speculation among international observers that she is being groomed as a potential successor to her father.
Military analysts note that North Korea’s large-sized rocket launchers occupy a gray area between traditional artillery systems and ballistic missiles. These sophisticated weapons create their own thrust and feature guidance capabilities during flight. North Korean officials have previously claimed some of these systems can deliver nuclear warheads, significantly raising the strategic threat they pose.
The weapons test comes amid the annual Freedom Shield exercises, a computer-simulated command post training between U.S. and South Korean forces scheduled to continue through March 19. North Korea routinely characterizes these joint drills as rehearsals for an invasion and typically responds with its own military demonstrations and heightened rhetoric.
This latest show of force continues a pattern of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Over the past two years, North Korea has dramatically accelerated its weapons development and testing programs, including multiple intercontinental ballistic missile launches and the expansion of its tactical nuclear capabilities.
The international community, particularly neighboring countries like Japan and South Korea, view these developments with growing alarm. The Biden administration has maintained that it is open to diplomatic engagement with North Korea, but insists that denuclearization must remain the ultimate goal of any negotiations.
For its part, the Kim regime has shown little interest in returning to talks without significant concessions from Washington, including the lifting of economic sanctions and scaling back military cooperation with Seoul.
Regional security experts warn that this cycle of military exercises, weapons tests, and hostile rhetoric increases the risk of miscalculation that could lead to unintended conflict. Meanwhile, ordinary North Koreans continue to face severe economic hardships exacerbated by international sanctions, pandemic-related border closures, and the government’s prioritization of military spending over civilian needs.
As the Freedom Shield exercises continue in the coming week, observers anticipate the possibility of additional provocative actions from Pyongyang as the isolated regime seeks to demonstrate its military capabilities and signal its defiance to the international community.
