Nine people have died and at least ten others were wounded after gunmen opened fire at a pub in South Africa’s Bekkersdal township early Sunday morning, marking the second mass shooting in the country within three weeks.

The attack occurred just before 1 a.m. at KwaNoxolo tavern in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal, approximately 46 kilometers west of Johannesburg. According to police reports, about 12 unknown assailants arrived in a white minibus and a silver sedan before unleashing a barrage of gunfire on patrons.

Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana, acting provincial commissioner of Gauteng, confirmed at the scene that the perpetrators, some wearing balaclavas, were armed with one AK-47 rifle and several 9-millimeter pistols. The gunmen continued firing indiscriminately as they fled.

“Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” police said in a statement regarding the incident that left nine people dead and ten hospitalized.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili revealed that an e-hailing driver who had just dropped off a client was among those caught in the crossfire. “He was shot and killed,” Muridili told The Associated Press.

Authorities have launched a comprehensive manhunt for the suspects, with Gauteng Serious and Violent Crime Investigations working alongside the Crime Detection Tracing Unit. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.

This latest tragedy follows a disturbing pattern of mass shootings at South African drinking establishments in recent years. Earlier this month, at least 12 people were killed and 13 injured when multiple suspects opened fire at an unlicensed bar near the South African capital. In 2022, a shooting in the Johannesburg township of Soweto claimed 16 lives, while four people were killed in a separate mass shooting at a bar in another province on the same day.

The Democratic Alliance, South Africa’s second-largest political party, has called for a special task force to investigate the two recent shootings in Gauteng province, highlighting growing concerns about gun violence in the region.

Bekkersdal’s location amid abandoned mine shafts makes it particularly vulnerable to violence. The area is notorious for illicit mining operations, which have spawned serious social problems including gang activity and widespread circulation of illegal firearms. These abandoned mines, known locally as “zama zamas,” have become havens for criminal organizations that often engage in territorial disputes.

The incidents underscore South Africa’s ongoing struggle with violent crime. With nearly 26,000 homicides recorded in 2024—averaging more than 70 deaths per day—South Africa maintains one of the world’s highest homicide rates. Firearms represent the predominant cause of death in these homicides, despite the country’s relatively strict gun control legislation.

Law enforcement officials attribute many of these murders to the proliferation of illegal weapons. According to crime experts, South Africa’s high unemployment rate, stark economic inequality, and legacy of apartheid contribute to the persistent violence plaguing communities like Bekkersdal.

The frequency of mass shootings at public venues has raised concerns about security measures and policing effectiveness in township areas, which historically have received fewer resources than more affluent neighborhoods. Community activists have long called for increased police presence and better infrastructure to address the underlying causes of violence.

As authorities continue their investigation into this latest attack, local residents remain on edge, with many calling for greater government intervention to stem the tide of gun violence affecting their communities.
