British rock icon Morrissey has canceled his concert in Valencia, Spain after claiming that the city’s famous Las Fallas festival disrupted his sleep, leaving him in what his team described as a “catatonic state.”

According to a statement posted on the singer’s website Thursday morning, the “scheduled show in Valencia has been rendered impossible due to sleep deprivation.” The 66-year-old former frontman of The Smiths had arrived in Valencia on Wednesday following a two-day drive from Milan, only to be disturbed throughout the night by what he described as “loud techno singing” and “megaphone announcements” that penetrated his hotel room.

In a separate post, Morrissey described his night as “indescribable hell,” adding dramatically, “It will take me one year to recover. And that is an understatement.”

The announcement created confusion among ticket holders, as the statement emphasized in bold print: “The show is not canceled. Circumstances render the show impossible.” This contradictory wording left unclear whether the performance would be rescheduled or if refunds would be available.

The incident comes during Morrissey’s tour promoting “Make-up Is a Lie,” his first album in six years and his 14th solo project since departing The Smiths, the influential 1980s alternative rock band that helped define a generation of British music.

The Las Fallas festival that reportedly disturbed the musician’s rest is one of Spain’s most significant cultural celebrations. The event, which takes place annually in Valencia, features street parties, fireworks, and culminates on March 19 with the burning of elaborate, handcrafted papier-mâché sculptures—a practice UNESCO recognized as intangible cultural heritage in 2016, describing it as “a form of purification” and “social renewal.”

This latest incident aligns with Morrissey’s reputation for unpredictable behavior. While beloved by fans for timeless classics like “How Soon Is Now?” and “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” the singer has become equally known for his temperamental character and controversial political positions over the years. His outspoken advocacy for animal rights has notably made him a vocal critic of Spain’s traditional bullfighting culture.

The cancellation represents another chapter in Morrissey’s sometimes tumultuous relationship with live performances. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for last-minute cancellations and strong reactions to perceived slights or inconveniences.

Music industry analysts note that such incidents can damage an artist’s relationship with promoters and venues. “When artists cancel at the last minute, especially for reasons that might seem trivial to fans, it creates significant logistical and financial problems for everyone involved,” said music industry consultant Maria Gonzalez, who specializes in European touring. “Venues lose bar revenue, staff wages still need to be paid, and promoters face upset fans demanding refunds.”

Despite this setback, Morrissey’s tour is scheduled to continue with upcoming performances in Zaragoza on Saturday and Seville on Monday. Whether the Valencia show will be rescheduled remains uncertain.

The singer’s latest album has received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising his distinctive vocal style and lyrical prowess while others question the relevance of his musical direction in today’s landscape.

Fans in Valencia expressed disappointment on social media, though many long-time followers seemed unsurprised by the cancellation. “Classic Moz,” wrote one fan on Twitter, using the singer’s nickname, while another commented, “I’ve been a fan for 30 years, and this is exactly why you always have a backup plan when you have tickets to see Morrissey.”
