Czech police are investigating after Molotov cocktails were thrown at a Russian cultural center in Prague late Thursday, marking a potential escalation of tensions in a capital city already sensitive to Russia-related issues.

According to police reports, an unidentified attacker hurled several incendiary devices at the Russian House, a state-funded cultural institution that lacks diplomatic status. Photographs from the scene show a broken window, with smoke damage visible on two windows and an exterior wall, though the building itself did not catch fire.

Igor Girenko, director of the center, told Russian state news agency Tass that half of the six Molotov cocktails failed to explode, potentially limiting the damage to the facility. The center typically hosts cultural events, educational programs, and Russian language courses.

The incident has drawn swift condemnation from both Czech and Russian officials. Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar described the attack as “unacceptable,” while Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova characterized it as “a barbaric act.” In response, the Russian embassy in Prague has formally requested enhanced security for Russian institutions and personnel throughout the Czech Republic.

This attack occurs against the backdrop of strained Czech-Russian relations, which have deteriorated significantly since 2021 when Czech authorities implicated Russian military intelligence in ammunition depot explosions that occurred in 2014, killing two people. That accusation led to the mutual expulsion of dozens of diplomats and embassy staff, effectively gutting both countries’ diplomatic missions.

The Czech Republic, a NATO and EU member with historically complex ties to Russia, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Public sentiment in Prague has largely turned against Russian interests, with numerous demonstrations supporting Ukraine occurring throughout the capital since the war began.

Cultural centers like the Russian House have faced increasing scrutiny across Europe, with critics arguing they serve as extensions of Russian soft power and potential fronts for intelligence activities. Supporters counter that they provide important cultural exchanges and educational opportunities that should remain separate from geopolitical tensions.

The timing of the attack is particularly sensitive as it follows several similar incidents targeting Russian cultural facilities in other European capitals over the past year. Security analysts note that while such attacks are typically isolated incidents rather than coordinated campaigns, they reflect the heightened emotions surrounding Russia’s international actions.

Prague police have not released details about potential suspects or motives, stating only that an investigation is underway. Authorities have increased surveillance in areas with Russian-affiliated institutions as a precautionary measure.

Local security experts point out that the Czech Republic has robust laws against politically motivated violence, with perpetrators of such attacks facing serious criminal charges regardless of the target. Czech government officials have consistently emphasized that while they firmly oppose Russian aggression in Ukraine, they do not condone violent actions against Russian cultural institutions or citizens in their country.

The Russian House has temporarily closed for security assessment but plans to resume operations in the coming days, according to a statement posted on its website. The center has been operating in Prague for decades, serving as one of Russia’s primary cultural outposts in Central Europe.
