Violent clashes across Mexico have left 25 National Guard troops and more than 30 criminal suspects dead following the killing of notorious drug lord Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” Mexican officials confirmed Monday.

Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch reported that the troops were killed in six separate attacks across Jalisco state after Mexican military forces shot Oseguera Cervantes during an operation at his residence. The violence claimed approximately 30 criminal suspects in Jalisco and four more in neighboring Michoacán.

“In addition to these casualties, we can confirm a prison guard, a state prosecutor’s agent, and a civilian woman were also killed in the violence,” García Harfuch said during a press conference alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The operation that led to Oseguera Cervantes’ death on Sunday was supported by U.S. intelligence, marking a significant achievement in the fight against one of Mexico’s most powerful criminal organizations. Defense Minister Ricardo Trevilla revealed that crucial intelligence leading to the military operation came from one of the crime boss’s romantic partners.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), which Oseguera Cervantes commanded, responded to their leader’s death with widespread violence, establishing more than 250 roadblocks across 20 Mexican states and setting vehicles ablaze. By Monday, authorities reported all roadblocks had been cleared, though tension remains high throughout the country.

President Sheinbaum urged calm during Monday’s press briefing as the government worked to restore order. The violence was severe enough that the U.S. State Department directed its personnel in cities across Mexico to shelter in place and advised American citizens in many regions to do the same.

CJNG has established itself as one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organizations over the past decade. Under Oseguera Cervantes’ leadership, the cartel expanded its operations across Mexico and built extensive international trafficking networks. The organization is primarily responsible for trafficking fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine into the United States, contributing significantly to the ongoing opioid crisis.

Security experts warn that the power vacuum created by Oseguera Cervantes’ death could lead to further violence as rival factions within the cartel and competing criminal groups battle for control of lucrative trafficking routes and territory.

“El Mencho was one of the most wanted drug traffickers in the world,” said a former DEA official who requested anonymity. “His death represents a major blow to the cartel’s leadership structure, but historically, the removal of cartel leaders has triggered succession battles and fragmentation of these criminal organizations.”

The weekend’s violence highlights the persistent challenges facing Mexico in its fight against organized crime. The CJNG is known for its military-style tactics and willingness to directly confront government forces. During the raid on Oseguera Cervantes’ compound, authorities reportedly seized a cache of high-powered weapons, including rocket launchers, highlighting the cartel’s substantial firepower.

The U.S. government had previously offered a $10 million reward for information leading to Oseguera Cervantes’ capture. American authorities had been tracking the cartel leader for years, as his organization has been responsible for significant portions of the illegal drugs entering the United States.

Tourism officials in regions like Puerto Vallarta, where some violence occurred, expressed concern about potential impacts on the vital tourism industry. Several airlines temporarily suspended flights to affected areas on Sunday, though most operations had resumed by Monday afternoon.

Mexican authorities have deployed additional security forces to affected regions to prevent further violence as they anticipate potential power struggles within the cartel in the coming weeks.
