Pakistani Businessman Convicted in Plot to Assassinate U.S. Politicians
A Pakistani business owner was convicted Friday of terrorism and murder-for-hire charges after attempting to orchestrate the assassination of high-profile American politicians, including former President Donald Trump. The case has highlighted concerns about foreign-backed plots against U.S. officials amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Asif Merchant, 47, faces up to life in prison following the Brooklyn jury’s verdict, which came after just a few hours of deliberation. The weeklong trial featured Merchant’s own testimony, in which he claimed to be acting on instructions from a contact in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.
According to court testimony, Merchant approached an acquaintance with his plan, using objects on a napkin to demonstrate how a shooting might unfold at a political rally. He requested help hiring assassins but was instead introduced to undercover FBI agents who recorded their interactions. During one meeting in Manhattan, Merchant paid $5,000 in cash to the supposed hit men, stating he needed services that could include killing “some political person.”
“This man landed on American soil hoping to kill President Trump — instead, he was met with the might of American law enforcement,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement following the conviction.
Merchant’s career spanned decades in Pakistani banking before he transitioned to clothing and other business ventures. With families in both Pakistan and Iran, he occasionally traveled to the United States for his garment business. During testimony, he claimed to have met a Revolutionary Guard intelligence operative approximately three years ago who provided countersurveillance training and assigned him various tasks, including the assassination plot.
In his defense, Merchant maintained that he reluctantly participated in the scheme to protect loved ones in Iran and expected to be arrested before anyone was harmed. “I was going along with it,” he testified through an Urdu interpreter.
Prosecutors emphasized that Merchant took concrete steps to execute the plan on behalf of the Revolutionary Guard, which the United States designates as a foreign terrorist organization. They noted that he made no proactive effort to contact authorities and was preparing to flee the country when arrested on July 12, 2024.
Notably, Merchant’s arrest came just one day before an unrelated assassination attempt on Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Officials have indicated that while the Butler shooter appeared to act alone, they had been monitoring a separate threat against Trump originating from Iran—an allegation the Islamic Republic has dismissed as “unsubstantiated and malicious.”
When initially interviewed by FBI agents about a potential cooperation agreement, Merchant did not claim to have acted under duress. Prosecutors argued this undermined his courtroom defense, though Merchant countered that he believed agents wouldn’t find his explanation credible since they seemed to “think that I am some type of super-spy,” which he insisted he was “absolutely not.”
The case comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. While Merchant testified that his handler never specified a target but mentioned names including Trump, President Joe Biden, and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, the Iranian government has categorically denied involvement in plots to assassinate U.S. officials.
The swift conviction sends a strong message about American vigilance against foreign-backed terrorism on U.S. soil, particularly during sensitive political periods like presidential campaigns. It also underscores the ongoing challenges U.S. intelligence and law enforcement agencies face in detecting and neutralizing such threats before they materialize.
Merchant’s attorney, Avraham Moskowitz, did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the verdict.
