A 32-year-old man has been charged with multiple offenses after allegedly ramming his vehicle into the historic Brisbane Synagogue in Australia on Friday evening, in what authorities are treating as a hate crime.

Queensland Police reported that just after 7:15 p.m. local time, a black Toyota Hilux utility truck struck and damaged the gates of the synagogue on Margaret Street before fleeing the scene. Officers quickly located the vehicle and apprehended the driver without incident.

The Sunnybank resident faces several serious charges, including willful damage, serious vilification or hate crime, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of dangerous drugs, and possession of drug paraphernalia. His identity has not yet been publicly released.

No injuries were reported during the incident, which police believe was carried out by a lone perpetrator. The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli addressed the attack, describing it as “very distressing for the Jewish community in Queensland.” He confirmed he had spoken with both Jewish community leaders and police officials about the incident.

“This is another signal as to why we have put strong laws before Parliament to protect all people where they worship,” Crisafulli wrote in a statement posted on social media. “We are going through the process and I fully intend to have them passed during the next sitting of Parliament.”

The Brisbane Synagogue, a landmark religious institution in Queensland’s capital, has long served as a spiritual center for the local Jewish community. The attack comes amid growing concerns about rising antisemitism globally, with religious institutions increasingly becoming targets for vandalism and violence.

The Queensland Police Service emphasized its commitment to community safety, stating it “continues to support and engage with all local religious communities.” Officials have assured the public there is no ongoing threat following the incident.

This attack follows a troubling pattern of antisemitic incidents in Australia and worldwide. In recent months, law enforcement agencies across multiple countries have reported increased security concerns around Jewish institutions, particularly following heightened tensions in the Middle East.

Australia has previously experienced similar incidents targeting religious communities. Last December, authorities responded to an apparent terror attack during Hanukkah celebrations, raising concerns about the safety of religious gatherings.

The charging of the suspect with a specific hate crime offense reflects Australia’s strengthened legal approach to addressing religiously motivated attacks. These laws aim to provide additional protections for vulnerable communities and impose stiffer penalties for crimes motivated by religious or racial hatred.

The Brisbane incident occurs against a backdrop of increasing antisemitic incidents reported by monitoring groups in Australia, with synagogues, Jewish schools, and community centers implementing heightened security measures in response.

Community leaders have expressed gratitude for the swift police response while calling for continued vigilance and public solidarity against religious intolerance. The Queensland Police statement emphasized that officers would maintain an increased presence around religious sites as a precautionary measure.

As investigations continue, authorities are examining potential motivations behind the attack and whether the suspect had expressed prior antisemitic sentiments or engaged in similar behavior.
