Authorities have arrested a man who climbed into the enclosure of Moo Deng, Thailand’s beloved pygmy hippopotamus that has captured hearts worldwide through social media, zoo officials confirmed Wednesday.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, when the unidentified Thai man entered the restricted area while no zookeepers were present and few visitors remained in the vicinity.
“The individual took advantage of a brief moment when staff supervision was minimal,” Narongwit Chodchoy, the zoo’s director, told The Associated Press. “Our security protocols generally prevent such intrusions, but this person deliberately bypassed barriers meant to protect both visitors and animals.”
Security footage that has since circulated widely across social platforms shows the man wearing a black beanie, sunglasses, green tank top, and brown shorts as he approached Moo Deng and her mother, Jona. The intruder appeared to be recording the encounter on a tablet device, seemingly attempting to capture close-up content of the famous hippo duo.
Zoo staff quickly spotted the trespasser, who remained in the enclosure for approximately one to two minutes. According to Narongwit, the man made no attempt to flee when confronted and remained on premises while police were summoned.
“The safety of our animals is our paramount concern,” Narongwit said. “While the man did not physically touch either Moo Deng or Jona, any unauthorized presence in animal habitats creates significant stress and potential danger for both the animals and the individual.”
Police have initially charged the man with trespassing, though additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. The suspect has since been released on bail while awaiting further legal proceedings. Zoo management has expressed its intention to pursue all available legal remedies against the trespasser.
In a statement published on the zoo’s official Facebook page Tuesday, officials noted that both pygmy hippos appeared “slightly startled” following the encounter. Veterinary staff will monitor the animals closely in the coming days to ensure no behavioral changes or health issues develop as a result of the incident.
“We are implementing additional security measures to prevent similar occurrences,” the statement added, while urging visitors to “strictly follow all rules and instructions from staff for the safety of both themselves and the wildlife.”
Moo Deng rose to international fame shortly after her birth earlier this year when zookeepers began sharing images and videos of the charismatic baby hippo online. Her expressive eyes, playful demeanor, and photogenic appearance quickly transformed her into a viral sensation, drawing comparisons to other famous zoo residents like Cincinnati Zoo’s Fiona the hippo.
The pygmy hippo’s popularity has translated into significant attendance increases at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, with visitors from across Thailand and international tourists making special trips specifically to see the pint-sized celebrity. Merchandise featuring Moo Deng’s likeness has also become a lucrative revenue stream for the facility.
Wildlife experts note that such celebrity animal status can create challenges for zoos, balancing public interest with animal welfare concerns. Pygmy hippopotamuses are classified as endangered, with fewer than 3,000 estimated to remain in the wild, primarily in West African forests.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo spans approximately 800 hectares and houses more than 2,000 animals. The facility participates in various conservation programs aimed at preserving threatened species, including the pygmy hippopotamus breeding program that resulted in Moo Deng’s birth.
