French authorities have charged two additional suspects in connection with last month’s high-profile jewel heist at the Louvre Museum in Paris, bringing the total number of people charged to four out of seven arrested individuals, prosecutors announced this weekend.

The brazen daylight robbery, which took place on October 19 at the world-renowned museum, involved a four-person team who stole jewelry valued at approximately 88 million euros ($102 million) from the Louvre’s Apollo Gallery. Security experts have been stunned by both the audacity and efficiency of the operation, which lasted less than eight minutes.

The newly charged suspects include a 38-year-old woman from the Paris suburb of La Courneuve, who faces counts of complicity in organized theft and criminal conspiracy, and a 37-year-old man charged with theft and criminal conspiracy. According to Reuters, both individuals have denied any involvement in the heist.

A magistrate judge ordered both suspects to remain in custody while the investigation continues, citing concerns they might collude with accomplices to destroy evidence. French authorities indicated that the male suspect has a criminal history that includes previous robberies.

The latest arrests follow the earlier detention of two other individuals. One was a 34-year-old Algerian national residing in France since 2010, who was apprehended at Charles de Gaulle Airport while attempting to leave the country on a one-way ticket to Algeria. Prosecutor Laure Beccuau reported that the man, previously known to police only for traffic violations, was linked to the crime when investigators identified his DNA on a scooter used during the escape.

The second previously charged suspect is a 39-year-old man from Aubervilliers, a Paris suburb, who has a record of multiple thefts. Forensic evidence tied him to the crime scene when his DNA was found on a display case that had contained the stolen jewels, as well as on several items abandoned at the museum.

The theft has raised serious questions about security protocols at one of the world’s most visited museums. The Louvre, which houses priceless treasures including the Mona Lisa, receives millions of visitors annually and has typically maintained robust security measures.

Art and jewelry theft experts suggest the heist was highly targeted, indicating the thieves had specific knowledge of the museum’s layout and security systems. The speed with which they executed the robbery suggests extensive planning and reconnaissance.

Museum security specialists note that high-value jewelry pieces are often targeted because they can be quickly dismantled, with precious stones potentially recut and metals melted down, making them impossible to trace on the black market.

The investigation continues as authorities work to recover the stolen items and determine whether additional accomplices remain at large. The case has drawn international attention not only for the substantial value of the stolen items but also for the audacity of targeting such a prominent cultural institution in broad daylight.

The Louvre has been working with law enforcement to review and strengthen security measures in the wake of the incident. Museum officials declined to comment on specific security enhancements being implemented, citing operational security concerns.

The heist comes at a sensitive time for Paris, which recently hosted the 2024 Olympic Games and has been working to bolster its image as a safe destination for international tourists following several high-profile incidents in recent years.
