Japan’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday that a second Japanese national has been detained in Iran, raising concerns about the safety of foreign nationals in the region amid escalating tensions. Officials are now demanding the immediate release of both detained individuals.

According to the ministry, the second detainee was taken into custody prior to the February 28 military strikes on Iran conducted by the United States and Israel. While officials have assured the public that the individual is safe and in good health, they have withheld specific details about when the detention occurred or whether it is connected to the previously reported detention of a Japanese journalist.

Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi addressed the situation during a parliamentary panel on Friday, confirming that Japanese officials had established contact with both detainees following the February 28 strikes and verified their well-being. “The government is doing everything to support them, their families and others involved,” Motegi stated.

The Foreign Minister also revealed that he had emphasized the importance of protecting the detainees and securing their swift release during a recent meeting with Iran’s ambassador to Japan.

While Japanese officials have been reluctant to disclose identities, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has identified the first detainee as Shinnosuke Kawashima, who serves as the Tehran bureau chief for NHK, Japan’s public broadcasting organization. According to CPJ, which cited an anonymous source speaking on condition of anonymity due to fear of reprisal, Kawashima was arrested on January 20 by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and subsequently transferred to the notorious Evin Prison on February 23.

Evin Prison has gained international notoriety for its alleged mistreatment of political prisoners and has been the subject of numerous human rights concerns. The facility, located in Tehran, has housed many journalists, activists, and foreign nationals over the years.

The detentions come at a particularly delicate time in Middle Eastern geopolitics. The February 28 strikes mentioned by the ministry were part of ongoing military tensions in the region, with the United States and Israel conducting operations against Iranian targets in response to attacks on American forces in the region and other security concerns.

These incidents highlight the precarious position of foreign journalists working in Iran, where press freedom has been severely restricted. International media watchdogs regularly rank Iran among the worst countries for press freedom, with journalists facing harassment, surveillance, and detention for their reporting activities.

Japan, which has traditionally maintained relatively cordial diplomatic relations with Iran compared to Western nations, now finds itself navigating a complex diplomatic situation. The country has historically sought to balance its alliance with the United States with its energy interests in Iran, one of the world’s largest oil producers.

The CPJ has joined Japanese authorities in calling for the immediate release of Kawashima and all other journalists detained in Iran for carrying out their professional duties. The organization has consistently documented a pattern of press freedom violations in the country, with foreign correspondents particularly vulnerable.

As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the fate of the two Japanese detainees has become a focal point of Japan’s diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, with potential implications for the country’s broader relationships in the region.
