Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has strongly rebuked former President Donald Trump for his comments suggesting NATO allies “stayed a little back” from the front lines in Afghanistan, calling his remarks “unacceptable” and a mischaracterization of Italy’s military commitment.

“Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, NATO activated Article 5 for the first and only time in its history: an extraordinary act of solidarity toward the United States,” Meloni wrote on social media platform X. She emphasized that Italy had responded “immediately” alongside its allies in Afghanistan, deploying thousands of troops and taking responsibility for Regional Command West, one of the mission’s most significant operational areas.

The Italian leader pointed to her country’s nearly two decades of involvement in Afghanistan, which came at a substantial human cost: 53 Italian soldiers killed and more than 700 wounded during combat operations, security missions, and training programs for Afghan forces.

“For this reason, statements that minimize the contribution of NATO countries in Afghanistan are unacceptable, especially if they come from an allied Nation,” Meloni added.

Her comments come in direct response to Trump’s recent interview with FOX Business host Maria Bartiromo at the World Economic Forum, where the former president downplayed NATO allies’ contributions in Afghanistan.

“We’ve never needed them. We have never really asked anything of them,” Trump said during the interview. “You know, they’ll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan, or this and that. And they did, they stayed a little back, a little off the front lines.”

The remarks have unsettled multiple U.S. allies across Europe, including UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Trump’s comments represent the latest in his longstanding criticism of NATO, where he has repeatedly questioned allies’ reliability and commitment to collective defense.

Following the backlash, Trump appeared to soften his stance, particularly regarding British forces. In a Saturday post on Truth Social, he praised UK troops, writing: “The GREAT and very BRAVE soldiers of the United Kingdom will always be with the United States of America! In Afghanistan, 457 died, many were badly injured, and they were among the greatest of all warriors.”

Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) also entered the discussion, highlighting the broader international toll of the war. He cited the sacrifices of 31 allied nations that fought alongside U.S. forces in Afghanistan, noting that 159 troops from Canada, 90 from France, 62 from Germany, 44 from Poland, and 43 from Denmark were among those killed in the conflict.

The controversy occurs amid ongoing tensions over NATO’s role and the commitment of member states to military spending. While Trump has been credited by some, including former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, for pressuring European allies to increase their defense budgets, his criticism of the alliance’s value to the United States has raised concerns about American commitment to collective security under a potential second Trump administration.

Meloni’s rebuke is particularly notable given her status as a right-wing leader who might otherwise be seen as a natural ally to Trump. Her statement emphasized that while “Italy and the United States are bound by a solid friendship,” that relationship requires mutual respect, which she called “a fundamental condition for continuing to ensure the solidarity at the heart of the Atlantic Alliance.”

The episode highlights the complex dynamics between the United States and its European allies as NATO faces significant challenges, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and rising tensions with Russia. It also underscores the potential diplomatic hurdles that could emerge should Trump return to the White House following the 2024 election.
