Israeli forces killed four Palestinians, including two children, in the northern West Bank town of Tammun, according to the Palestinian Authority’s Health Ministry. The victims were identified as Ali and Waed Odeh and two of their children, who were shot in the head while traveling in their car. Their two other children survived with shrapnel wounds.

The incident occurred as the family was returning from shopping for Eid al-Fitr celebrations in Nablus, according to Najah al-Subhi, the grandmother of the children. Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, a significant religious holiday for Muslims worldwide.

In a joint statement released Sunday, Israel’s military and police claimed that forces opened fire after a vehicle accelerated toward them during an operation to pursue suspects accused of “terrorist activity.” They added that the shooting is under investigation.

The Palestinian Red Crescent rescue service has accused Israeli authorities of deliberately delaying ambulances dispatched to the scene, preventing prompt medical assistance to the wounded children. When first responders were finally granted access, they found the surviving children suffering from shrapnel wounds to the eye and head.

Tammun’s mayor, Sameer Basharat, stated that he received news of the incident in the middle of the night. He noted that the shooting took place in the town center, where the Israeli army maintains a daily military presence. Tammun is one of several towns where Israeli forces have maintained a continuous presence for more than a year as part of an offensive launched in the northern West Bank to counter militant activity.

According to Basharat, Tammun residents have faced significant hardships during the ongoing military operations. Residents have been evicted from their homes, denied access to farmland, and subjected to frequent raids and road closures. Additionally, Israeli authorities have been seizing land to construct a new fence that would divide the Jordan Valley, further restricting Palestinian movement and access.

The Israeli human rights organization B’tselem reported that the Odeh family’s car was riddled with bullets and claimed that Israeli forces had “violently interrogated” one of the wounded surviving children. The group also highlighted the absence of effective accountability mechanisms for such incidents.

This concern is supported by data from another Israeli rights group, Yesh Din, which found that Israeli soldiers accused of harming Palestinians were indicted in fewer than 1% of cases based on 2,427 complaints alleging wrongdoing between 2016 and 2024.

The violence in Tammun occurs amid escalating tensions in the West Bank. Since the beginning of the Israel-Iran conflict, Israeli authorities have imposed severe restrictions on movement throughout the occupied territory, intermittently closing hundreds of gates and checkpoints on roads used by residents, ambulances, and commercial traffic. These barriers have significantly impaired civilian movement and complicated emergency response efforts, according to the Red Crescent.

Yesh Din has documented 109 incidents of settler violence in the occupied West Bank across dozens of Palestinian communities since the start of the current conflict. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has recorded 18 Palestinians killed in the occupied West Bank since the beginning of 2024, including eight killed by Israeli settlers.

The deaths of the Odeh family members represent the latest casualties in a region experiencing heightened violence and restricted civilian movements. Human rights organizations continue to express concern about the lack of accountability for violence against Palestinians and the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in the occupied territories.
