Israeli Officials Criticize Australian Government Following Deadly Sydney Shooting

Israeli officials have sharply criticized the Australian government in the wake of a deadly shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, claiming authorities ignored mounting antisemitism that they believe contributed to the attack.

At least 11 people were killed and 29 hospitalized after gunmen opened fire Sunday at a “Chanukah By The Sea” event near Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach. Police confirmed that one alleged shooter was killed during the incident while another is in hospital, and authorities are investigating the possibility of a third attacker.

In an unusually pointed response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used a government meeting to read aloud a letter he had previously sent to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. The letter, sent earlier this year after Albanese declared support for a Palestinian state, warned that such a stance “pours fuel on the antisemitic fire” and “rewards Hamas terrorists.”

“Instead, Prime Minister, you replaced weakness with weakness and appeasement with more appeasement,” Netanyahu said. “Your government did nothing to stop the spread of antisemitism in Australia. You did nothing to curb the cancer cells that were growing inside your country. You took no action. You let the disease spread and the result is the horrific attacks on Jews we saw today.”

Other top Israeli officials joined in the criticism. Israeli President Isaac Herzog posted on social media an image of a blood-stained prayer shawl, stating, “Time and again we called on the Australian government to take action and fight against the enormous wave of antisemitism that is plaguing Australian society.”

Foreign Minister Gideon Saar issued perhaps the most scathing critique, directly linking the attack to what he described as an “antisemitic rampage in the streets of Australia over the past two years.” Saar referenced chants of “Globalize the Intifada” that he claimed were “realized today” and demanded that the “Australian government, which received countless warning signs, must come to its senses!”

Law enforcement officials revealed that the attack appears to have been well-planned. Police discovered evidence of multiple improvised explosive devices in a vehicle near the scene, prompting deployment of bomb disposal units. The sophisticated nature of the attack has raised concerns about growing extremism targeting Jewish communities.

The shooting represents one of the deadliest attacks in recent Australian history and comes amid rising global tensions following the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict that began with Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel. Jewish communities worldwide have reported significant increases in antisemitic incidents since the war began.

The timing of the attack during Hanukkah, an important Jewish holiday celebrating religious freedom, has added to its symbolic impact and intensified concerns about the security of Jewish institutions globally.

Prime Minister Albanese condemned the attack and specifically denounced the targeting of Jewish Australians, but Israeli officials clearly believe the response is insufficient and too late.

The incident has highlighted growing diplomatic tensions between Israel and Australia, particularly following Australia’s recognition of Palestinian statehood. Relations between the two countries have been strained as Australia has criticized aspects of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza while maintaining it supports Israel’s right to self-defense.

As investigations continue, security has been increased at Jewish institutions worldwide, with many communities already on heightened alert during the Hanukkah holiday period. The attack is likely to renew debates about counter-extremism policies and the global rise in religious-based violence.
