Israeli forces announced Saturday they have killed a senior Hamas commander in Gaza following an explosive device attack that wounded two Israeli soldiers in the southern part of the territory.

The Israeli military identified the target as Raed Saad, describing him as Hamas’ manufacturing chief who previously led the group’s operations division. Israeli officials claimed Saad was a key architect of the October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel and accused him of working to rebuild Hamas’ capabilities in violation of the current ceasefire agreement.

Hamas, however, did not confirm Saad’s death in its response. The militant group instead stated that a civilian vehicle had been struck outside Gaza City, characterizing the attack as a breach of the ceasefire that took effect on October 10.

According to an Associated Press journalist at the scene, the Israeli strike west of Gaza City killed four people, whose bodies were transported to Shifa Hospital. Al-Awda hospital reported an additional three people were wounded in the attack.

The incident marks the latest in a series of mutual accusations between Israel and Hamas regarding ceasefire violations. Palestinian health officials report that Israeli airstrikes and shootings in Gaza have resulted in at least 386 Palestinian deaths since the truce began. Israeli authorities maintain that recent military actions were responses to militant attacks against their soldiers, adding that troops have fired on Palestinians approaching the “Yellow Line” – the boundary separating Israeli-controlled areas from the rest of Gaza.

The ceasefire negotiations have reached a critical juncture, with Israel demanding the return of the remains of Ran Gvili, the final hostage believed to be in Gaza. Israeli officials have established this as a prerequisite for progressing to the second phase of the ceasefire plan, which envisions ending Hamas’ governance and rebuilding a demilitarized Gaza under international supervision.

The conflict began with Hamas’ October 2023 attack on southern Israel that killed approximately 1,200 people and resulted in 251 hostages being taken into Gaza. Nearly all hostages or their remains have since been returned through various agreements and prisoner exchanges.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, now in its third year, has had devastating consequences for the Palestinian territory. Gaza’s Health Ministry reports that more than 70,650 Palestinians have been killed, with women and children comprising roughly half of the casualties. While the ministry operates under the Hamas-run government, its medical professionals maintain detailed records that international observers generally consider reliable, though the figures do not distinguish between militants and civilians.

The war has left much of Gaza in ruins, with most of its 2.2 million residents displaced from their homes. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with aid deliveries failing to meet the levels stipulated in the ceasefire agreement. Palestinians who lost limbs during the conflict face particular hardship, with severe shortages of prosthetic limbs and significant delays in medical evacuations to facilities outside Gaza.

Regional analysts note that this latest killing of a senior Hamas figure could further complicate the already fragile ceasefire. The targeted killing represents a significant escalation that might provoke retaliatory actions from Hamas or other militant groups operating in Gaza.

International humanitarian organizations continue to express concern about the deteriorating conditions in Gaza, where infrastructure damage has severely limited access to clean water, adequate medical care, and essential services for the civilian population caught in the prolonged conflict.
