Iranian Leadership in Turmoil: Mojtaba Khamenei Described as “Empty Entity” by Israeli Sources

Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been characterized as an “empty entity” who lacks genuine control over the regime, according to Israeli national security sources. The son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a targeted Israeli strike on February 28, has inherited a leadership role in what officials describe as a “misfunctioning” regime.

“The new leader is an empty entity,” said Kobi Michael, a defense analyst at the Institute for National Security Studies and the Misgav Institute, in an interview. “Mojtaba Khamenei does not appear in public, but we also have reliable information that he does not control or lead the regime or what has been left of the regime. The current Iranian leadership is broken, confused and is almost misfunctioning.”

According to leaked audio accessed by The Telegraph, Mojtaba narrowly escaped death on the day his father was killed, reportedly leaving the compound for a walk just minutes before an Israeli missile strike. The audio, allegedly from a March 12 meeting, revealed that several members of the Khamenei family were killed in the attack, while Mojtaba himself sustained “a minor injury to his leg,” according to Mazaher Hosseini, head of protocol for Khamenei’s office.

Since his appointment as supreme leader, Mojtaba has not made any public appearances. His only communication has been through messages read on Iranian state television, including warnings of continued strikes and urging Gulf nations to shut down U.S. bases. This absence has fueled speculation about his condition, with some reports suggesting he might be in critical condition or even in a coma, though Iranian officials maintain he is in good health.

The ongoing Israeli campaign has systematically eliminated key figures in the Iranian leadership structure. Most recently, senior security official Ali Larijani was killed in an Israeli strike, prompting Mojtaba Khamenei to issue a statement vowing revenge: “Such acts of terror only reflect the enemies’ hostility and will strengthen the resolve of the Islamic nation. Undoubtedly, justice will be served.”

Larijani, one of Iran’s top security figures, was reportedly located by Israeli intelligence on the outskirts of Tehran. Other senior figures killed in recent strikes include Basij militia leader Gholamreza Soleimani, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The targeted elimination of Iranian leadership appears to be part of a broader strategy. Michael described the strikes as “not a new phase, but a continuing effort and a very successful and impressive one and a crucial component of the strategy meant to weaken the Iranian regime.” The ultimate goal, he suggested, is to weaken Iran “to the degree that it will not be able to reconstitute itself and/or to become again a severe threat and destabilizing player in the broader Middle East.”

Following the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes, President Donald Trump addressed the Iranian people directly, suggesting their “moment of freedom” had arrived and encouraging them to “take over your government” once the military campaign concludes. This message aligns with what appears to be a strategic objective beyond mere military targets.

“At the very same time, by weakening the regime and paralyzing its capacities generally speaking and its domestic control specifically, the U.S. and Israel are facilitating the required conditions for the Iranian people to topple the regime,” Michael added. “This is the ultimate victory in their eyes, and the route to this destination is that they are trying to increase any damage wherever they can.”

The systematic targeting of Iran’s leadership structure represents a significant escalation in the regional conflict, with potentially far-reaching consequences for stability in the Middle East. As the leadership vacuum in Tehran grows, questions remain about who truly wields power in the Islamic Republic and whether the regime can maintain its grip on power amid mounting internal and external pressures.
