Iranians Celebrate Following Israeli Strikes That Killed Supreme Leader Khamenei

Widespread celebrations erupted across Iran and among Iranian expatriate communities worldwide following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in coordinated Israeli strikes overnight.

In cities throughout Iran, scenes of jubilation filled streets and neighborhoods as news spread of Khamenei’s death. In Karaj, just outside the capital Tehran, citizens took to the streets, honking car horns and cheering. Social media videos showed Tehran residents celebrating from their apartment windows, playing music and setting off fireworks despite the late hour.

The celebrations extended to numerous Iranian cities. In Fuladshahr, crowds packed the streets, waving arms and whistling in celebration. Borazjan saw people gathering to chant, while in Mamasani, residents waved flags and danced in the streets. Similar scenes played out in Shiraz and Abadan, where people remained outdoors until early morning.

“Iranians poured onto the streets cheering, clapping, waving the lion and sun flag, dancing openly and singing the old national anthem,” said Lisa Daftari, editor at The Foreign Desk. “It’s hard to imagine a people so starved for freedom, so desperate for justice, that they are cheering military strikes on their own soil as the price of liberation.”

The demonstrations reflect decades of growing discontent under the Islamic Republic’s rule, which began after the 1979 revolution. Khamenei had served as Supreme Leader since 1989, wielding ultimate authority over Iran’s politics, military, and judiciary.

The celebrations weren’t limited to Iran. The global Iranian diaspora, estimated at several million people, organized gatherings in major cities worldwide. In Los Angeles, home to the largest Iranian American community in the United States, hundreds assembled, waving both Iranian and American flags. Some carried signs reading “Make Iran Great Again.”

Similar scenes unfolded in Madrid, London, Berlin, and other European capitals with significant Iranian populations. In many locations, people displayed pre-revolutionary Iranian flags featuring the lion and sun emblem, a symbol that had been banned by the Islamic Republic.

Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad, who has faced multiple assassination attempts allegedly orchestrated by the Iranian regime, expressed her sentiments to media: “I grew up in a country where I was brainwashed to say, ‘Death to America,’ the same country — how ironic — the same country that saved my life three times and is now helping my people in Iran. They’re celebrating out of joy.”

The strikes against Iran come after escalating tensions in the Middle East. Iran recently launched missile attacks against U.S. bases in the region, following American strikes on Iranian nuclear and Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) sites. The conflict has raised concerns about regional stability and potential for wider escalation.

Not all reactions were celebratory. In several U.S. cities, including Boston, Washington D.C., and New York, anti-war protests took place, with similar demonstrations occurring across European capitals. These competing gatherings highlight the complex international perspectives on military actions in the Middle East.

The death of Khamenei marks a potentially transformative moment for Iran, which has been under clerical rule for over four decades. Questions now emerge about succession plans and the future direction of the country, as well as potential shifts in Iran’s domestic policies and international relations.

For many Iranians both inside the country and abroad, the moment represents hope for change after years of economic hardship, political repression, and international isolation. However, uncertainty remains about what government structure might emerge and how regional dynamics could shift in response.
