Israel has killed Iran’s Minister of Intelligence Esmaeil Khatib in a precision strike conducted overnight, according to a senior Israeli official who spoke to Fox News on Wednesday. The operation was reportedly carried out through a joint U.S.-Israeli intelligence effort.

The official described Khatib as “a central player in plots targeting American officials” with direct ties to threats against current and former U.S. officials, including former President Donald Trump. “This man had American blood on his hands,” the official stated.

Khatib had previously survived a comprehensive Israeli strike on Iran’s senior leadership at the “Defense Council” compound in Tehran during the initial phase of Operation Epic Fury. That attack reportedly killed more than 40 Iranian leaders in approximately 40 seconds, making Khatib the only known survivor of that operation.

“Today, he met the fate of his combatant comrades,” the Israeli official told Fox News.

The intelligence minister joins a growing list of high-ranking Iranian officials killed by Israel since the start of the conflict. Other casualties have included Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Ali Larijani (secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council), General Gholamreza Soleimani (commander of Iran’s Basij unit), and Mohammad Pakpour (commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps).

According to the Israel Defense Forces, Khatib played a pivotal role in directing crackdowns on demonstrators in Iran, including both arrests and killings during recent civil unrest. He was particularly involved in the government’s response to the nationwide protests triggered by the 2022 death of Mahsa Amini, who died while in custody of Iran’s morality police.

The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control had sanctioned Khatib in 2022 for his leadership of Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS). U.S. officials accused the ministry of orchestrating cyberattacks against the United States and its allies, with Treasury officials stating that the organization oversaw global cyber operations targeting both government and private-sector organizations, including disruptive attacks on critical infrastructure.

Khatib’s rise to power began during the Iran-Iraq War in 1980 when he enlisted in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, according to United Against Nuclear Iran, a nonpartisan advocacy group. The organization reports that Khatib studied under Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, before joining MOIS in the mid-1980s shortly after its establishment in 1983.

Just last week, the U.S. State Department’s Rewards for Justice program offered up to $10 million for information on senior Iranian security figures connected to the IRGC and its networks, specifically including Khatib among those targeted.

The assassination represents another significant blow to Iran’s leadership structure amid escalating regional tensions. Since the beginning of the conflict, Israel has systematically targeted Iran’s highest-ranking military and intelligence officials in what appears to be a coordinated campaign to dismantle the country’s security apparatus.

The timing of the strike is particularly notable as it comes during a period of heightened diplomatic activity surrounding Middle East peace negotiations. Regional analysts suggest that the elimination of Khatib could significantly impact Iran’s intelligence operations both domestically and abroad, potentially disrupting planned operations against Western interests.

The Israeli operation demonstrates the continued intelligence cooperation between Israel and the United States, despite occasional public differences over military strategy in the region. This cooperation appears to be particularly focused on neutralizing threats to American officials and interests, according to the Israeli source’s statements.

Iranian officials have not yet publicly commented on Khatib’s reported death. The country typically takes several days to confirm high-profile casualties among its leadership ranks.
