Iran seized two foreign oil tankers in the Persian Gulf on Thursday, detaining 15 crew members and accusing the vessels of smuggling approximately one million liters of fuel. The incident occurs just one day before scheduled high-level talks between U.S. and Iranian officials in Oman.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy intercepted the two ships near Farsi Island as part of what Iranian authorities described as an operation against an organized fuel-smuggling network that had been operating in the region for months. According to Iranian state media, the crews—comprising 15 foreign nationals—were taken into custody and referred to Iran’s judicial authorities.

Iranian officials stated that the vessels were identified through intelligence monitoring and seized during coordinated naval operations. While framing the action as a significant blow to illegal fuel trafficking, Iranian authorities have not yet disclosed the nationality of the vessels or their intended destinations.

The seizures come amid escalating tensions in the strategically vital Persian Gulf region. The Strait of Hormuz, where approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil and petroleum products pass through, has become a focal point of geopolitical friction.

Former Iranian minister and ex-state broadcaster chief Ezzatollah Zarghami issued threatening statements on Thursday, warning of potential violence in the strait. “I am sure that the Strait of Hormuz will be the place of massacre and hell for the U.S.,” Zarghami declared. He later repeated the threat, describing the area as a potential “killing field” for American forces and signaling Iran’s willingness to escalate tensions.

“Iran will show that the Strait of Hormuz has historically belonged to Iran. The only thing the Americans can think of is playing with their vessels and moving them from one place to another,” he added.

The timing of these seizures is particularly significant as they come just before scheduled talks between U.S. and Iranian officials. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to meet with Iranian representatives in Oman on Friday. The American delegation is traveling from Abu Dhabi, where they participated in two days of discussions related to Russia and Ukraine.

Despite the heightened tensions, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed on Thursday that the planned talks would proceed, stating that “diplomacy is always [Trump’s] first option.”

The Persian Gulf has long been a flashpoint for tensions between Iran and Western powers. The IRGC has previously seized vessels in the region, often citing smuggling or other maritime violations. These incidents have raised concerns about freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most critical shipping channels and have contributed to volatility in global energy markets.

Maritime security experts note that seizures of this nature not only impact immediate commercial interests but also have broader implications for international shipping and global oil prices. The Strait of Hormuz is particularly vulnerable as its narrow passage forces vessels to travel through Iranian territorial waters, giving the country significant leverage in regional maritime affairs.

The detention of the tankers also occurs against the backdrop of Iran’s continued regional activities through proxy forces and its nuclear program development, both of which have been sources of international concern.

Energy market analysts will be watching closely to see if these latest tensions affect oil prices or shipping insurance rates for vessels traversing the Gulf region. Previous incidents in the Strait have led to temporary spikes in crude oil prices due to concerns about potential supply disruptions.

As the U.S.-Iran talks approach, observers will be looking for signs of whether this latest maritime incident will affect diplomatic efforts or further complicate the already tense relationship between the two nations.
