Iran has announced plans to conduct live-fire military exercises in the strategic Strait of Hormuz next week, a move that comes amid rising tensions with the United States following President Donald Trump’s warning of an approaching U.S. naval force to the region.

According to Iranian state media reports on Thursday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) naval forces will carry out the drills in one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which approximately 20% of global oil shipments pass daily.

The announcement follows President Trump’s statement that a significant naval contingent led by the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group is heading toward Iranian waters. In a message posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump issued a stern warning to Tehran, urging the Islamic Republic to swiftly return to nuclear negotiations.

“Time is running out, it is truly of the essence!” Trump wrote. “As I told Iran once before, MAKE A DEAL! They didn’t, and there was ‘Operation Midnight Hammer,’ a major destruction of Iran. The next attack will be far worse! Don’t make that happen again.”

Trump’s reference to “Operation Midnight Hammer” refers to the June 2025 U.S. strikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. During that operation, B-2 stealth bombers flew 37 hours non-stop from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri to drop 12 GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators on the Fordow facility and two on Natanz. Additionally, more than two dozen cruise missiles were launched at Isfahan from a U.S. submarine.

Military analysts note that the Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, has long been a flashpoint in U.S.-Iran relations. As a narrow maritime passage just 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, any conflict in this area could severely disrupt global energy supplies and send oil prices soaring.

The timing of Iran’s military exercise announcement is particularly significant as it comes while Trump is reportedly considering further military action against Tehran. Sources familiar with the situation indicate that U.S. military assets are being positioned throughout the Middle East in preparation for potential operations.

Iran has taken a defiant stance in response to these developments. Last week, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that Iran would respond “with everything we have” to any new U.S. military attack. He accused Washington and its allies of exploiting recent civil unrest within Iran to push the region toward broader conflict.

“As Iranians grieve their loved ones and rebuild what has been destroyed, another threat looms: the final failure of diplomacy,” Araghchi stated. “Unlike the restraint Iran showed in June 2025, our powerful armed forces have no qualms about firing back with everything we have if we come under renewed attack.”

The escalation comes against the backdrop of international concern over the Iranian government’s crackdown on anti-regime protesters, which has reportedly resulted in thousands of casualties. Human rights organizations have documented widespread arrests, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings as the Islamic Republic attempts to quell domestic opposition.

The U.S. has also recently enhanced its defensive posture in the region, opening a new air defense operations cell at a Qatar base that was previously targeted by Iranian missiles in a retaliatory attack.

Energy markets are closely monitoring the situation, with analysts warning that even a limited conflict could significantly impact global oil supplies and prices. The Strait of Hormuz serves as the export route for crude oil from Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, and other major producers.

As military forces from both nations increase their presence in this volatile region, diplomatic channels remain limited, raising concerns about the potential for miscalculation that could lead to direct military confrontation.
