Security forces have thwarted an Iranian plot to assassinate Israel’s ambassador to Mexico, Einat Kranz Neiger, officials revealed Friday. The operation, allegedly orchestrated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), had been developing since late last year before being neutralized through international cooperation.

“We thank the security and law enforcement services in Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico,” Israel’s foreign ministry said in a statement. The ministry added that Israeli security agencies would “continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, to thwart terrorist threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide.”

A U.S. official familiar with the situation told Reuters that the assassination plot “was contained and does not pose a current threat.” The official described the attempt as “just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global lethal targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents, and anyone who disagrees with them,” adding that such activities “should deeply worry every country where there is an Iranian presence.”

While specific details about the plot’s mechanics and how it was discovered remain undisclosed, the incident highlights escalating tensions between Iran and Israel amid ongoing regional conflicts.

The attempted assassination fits into a broader pattern of Iranian-backed operations targeting Israeli and Jewish interests globally. Security services in Britain claimed to have disrupted at least 20 Iranian-linked plots since 2022, according to Reuters. Both British and Swedish intelligence agencies have warned that Iran increasingly relies on criminal proxies to carry out attacks on foreign soil, creating a more complex threat landscape for international security services.

The IRGC, a powerful branch of Iran’s armed forces designated as a terrorist organization by several countries including the United States, has been implicated in numerous overseas operations targeting opponents of the Iranian regime and perceived enemies of the Islamic Republic.

Mexico has increasingly found itself caught in geopolitical crossfires involving Middle Eastern powers. The country hosts significant diplomatic missions from both Israel and Iran, making it a potential theater for proxy conflicts between the adversaries.

Ambassador Einat Kranz Neiger, the target of the plot, continues to serve as Israel’s top diplomat in Mexico. The Israeli embassy in Mexico City has previously been the site of pro-Palestinian protests, reflecting the polarized sentiments surrounding the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East.

This incident comes amid heightened international tensions following more than a year of war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, as well as Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran, which backs both Hamas and Hezbollah, has maintained a posture of hostility toward Israel, with Iranian leaders frequently calling for the elimination of the Jewish state.

The foiled plot also underscores the extensive intelligence cooperation between Israel, the United States, and partner nations in tracking and disrupting Iranian operations worldwide. Such collaboration has become increasingly critical as Iran reportedly expands its covert activities abroad.

International security experts note that diplomatic personnel have become high-value targets in the shadow war between Iran and Israel, forcing countries hosting missions from either nation to significantly increase security measures around embassies and diplomatic residences.

Neither Iran nor Mexico’s government has issued official statements regarding the thwarted assassination attempt as of this reporting.
