Indian authorities announced Sunday the arrest of a key suspect connected to last week’s deadly car bombing in New Delhi that killed 10 people and injured 32 others near the historic Red Fort.

The National Investigating Agency (NIA) described the arrest of Amir Rashid Ali from Indian-controlled Kashmir as a “major breakthrough” in their investigation. According to their statement, Ali allegedly facilitated the purchase of the vehicle used in Monday’s suicide bombing, having traveled from Kashmir to New Delhi specifically for this purpose.

Indian officials have labeled the explosion a “heinous terror incident” carried out by “anti-national forces,” signaling the gravity with which security agencies are treating the case. The blast occurred in a heavily trafficked area near one of India’s most recognizable landmarks, raising concerns about security vulnerabilities in the capital.

The NIA has identified the suspected suicide bomber as Umar Un Nabi, a Kashmiri doctor who taught at a medical college in Faridabad, a city adjacent to New Delhi. In a controversial move that has drawn criticism from human rights groups, security forces demolished Nabi’s family home in Kashmir’s Pulwama district Thursday night in what appears to be a retaliatory action.

The car bombing occurred just hours after police in Kashmir announced they had dismantled a suspected militant cell operating from the disputed region. That operation resulted in at least seven arrests, including two Kashmiri doctors working in Indian cities, and the seizure of substantial quantities of bomb-making materials.
