Israeli Airstrike Kills Family of Four in Gaza Amid Fragile Ceasefire

An Israeli airstrike on Sunday killed at least four Palestinians, including a couple expecting twins and two children, in Gaza’s Nuseirat refugee camp, according to local hospital authorities.

The strike targeted a house in the densely populated urban camp in central Gaza, killing a couple in their 30s and their 10-year-old son, as reported by Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital officials. The woman was pregnant with twins at the time of her death. The fourth victim, a 15-year-old neighbor, was transported to Awda hospital, where medical staff confirmed his death. The teenager’s younger brother was also wounded in the attack.

“We were sleeping and got up to the strike of a missile. The strike was strong,” local resident Mahmoud al-Muhtaseb told reporters at the scene. “There was no prior warning.”

The Israeli military has not issued any immediate comment regarding the airstrike or the civilian casualties.

This deadly incident is the latest in a series of ongoing hostilities that have persisted despite an October ceasefire agreement meant to halt the more than two-year war between Israel and Hamas. While the most intense fighting has subsided under the agreement, Gaza health officials report that over 650 Palestinians have been killed since the ceasefire began.

The ongoing violence has followed a pattern of Israeli airstrikes and ground fire directed at Palestinians near military-held zones. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, approximately half of those killed during the ceasefire period have been women and children.

The Israeli government has maintained that its military operations during this period have been responses to ceasefire violations or targeted efforts against wanted militants. However, humanitarian organizations have expressed concern about the high proportion of civilian casualties in what was expected to be a period of reduced violence.

The conflict, which began with Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, has resulted in catastrophic humanitarian consequences. The Hamas attack killed over 1,200 Israelis and led to more than 250 hostages being taken. In the subsequent Israeli military campaign, more than 72,200 Palestinians have been killed according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

The ministry, which operates under the Hamas-led government in Gaza, maintains detailed casualty records that United Nations agencies and independent experts generally consider reliable, though it does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties in its reporting.

The fragile ceasefire has been marked by periodic violence from both sides. Palestinian militants have conducted shooting attacks on Israeli troops, and Israel has responded with airstrikes and artillery fire. Since the ceasefire took effect, four Israeli soldiers have been killed in these continuing hostilities.

The Nuseirat refugee camp, where Sunday’s airstrike occurred, is one of Gaza’s most densely populated areas. Established decades ago, it has evolved into an urban neighborhood that houses thousands of Palestinian families, many of whom have been displaced multiple times throughout the conflict.

International organizations continue to call for a permanent cessation of hostilities and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, many of whom face severe shortages of food, clean water, medical supplies, and shelter.
